It tells a grand tale about protecting the world. The story follows a middle school girl named Usagi Tsukino. She lives in the Azabu-Jūban district of Tokyo during the 1990s. Usagi learns she is actually a princess from the Moon Kingdom. A talking cat named Luna helps her discover this secret identity. Usagi can transform into the hero known as Sailor Moon.

To save the world, Usagi leads a team of heroes. These teammates are known as the Sailor Guardians. The main group includes Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus. They work together to find a powerful object called the Silver Crystal. They must also fight villains to stop the destruction of the Solar System. Other heroes join them later, such as Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune. Even Usagi's future daughter, Chibiusa, becomes part of the team. These characters use their unique powers to protect the Earth and the Moon.

Naoko Takeuchi first developed this idea from an earlier story. That story was called Codename: Sailor V, published in August 1991. Takeuchi wanted to make a story about girls in outer space. Her editor, Fumio Osano, suggested the characters wear sailor school uniforms. This idea helped blend the magical girl genre with the Super Sentai style. The manga first appeared in the magazine Nakayoshi in December 1991. It ran for several years until February 1997. The series grew from a single story arc into many different adventures.

This story has become a huge success all over the world. The manga has sold more than 46 million copies. This makes it one of the best-selling manga series ever made. The anime, or Japanese cartoon, was made by Toei Animation. It first aired in Japan from 1992 to 1997. There were also three animated movies and a live-action TV show. In 2014, a new series called Sailor Moon Crystal began. The franchise has also created many items for people to buy. These include many different kinds of merchandise.

Sailor Moon helped many people in the West discover Japanese animation. In North America, the show became very popular in the 1990s. Sometimes, the English versions changed names to fit local cultures. For example, Usagi was called Serena in some English versions. Other names like Mamoru were changed to Darien Shields. Even the way cars drive was flipped in some scenes. Despite these changes, the story remains a beloved part of history. It connects many fans through its art and its themes of courage.
