Inuyasha is a famous Japanese manga series. Manga are books filled with drawings and stories. This series was written and drawn by Rumiko Takahashi. It is a tale about magic, history, and friendship. The story became a huge success around the world. By September 2020, 50 million copies were in circulation. This makes it one of the best-selling manga series ever.

The story begins with a girl named Kagome Higurashi. She is a fifteen-year-old student from modern Tokyo. One day, she falls into a well at her family shrine. This well sends her back in time to the Sengoku period. This was an old time in Japan when many wars happened. In this era, she meets a character named Inuyasha. He is a half-dog demon and a half-human.

Kagome and Inuyasha must go on a big quest. They are looking for the Shikon Jewel. This is a sacred jewel that can grant wishes. During a struggle, the jewel shatters into many small pieces. These shards scatter across all of Japan. Many different demons and humans try to find them. Kagome and Inuyasha meet friends like Miroku the monk and Sango the slayer. They work together to stop an evil half-demon named Naraku.

Rumiko Takahashi created this series after her work on Ranma ½. She wanted to tell a darker and more serious story. She chose the Sengoku period to show these serious themes. The manga first appeared in Weekly Shōnen Sunday in 1996. It ran for over eleven years until June 2008. The series was collected into 56 different volumes. In 2002, the manga won the 47th Shogakukan Manga Award.

Many people have enjoyed this story in different ways. It was made into two anime television series by Sunrise. The first show ran from 2000 to 2004. A second series called The Final Act aired in 2009. There are also four animated feature films. These movies have earned over 20 million dollars at the Japanese box office. A new show called Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon also tells more stories. It follows the daughters of the original characters.
