YuYu Hakusho is a famous Japanese manga series. A manga is a type of comic book from Japan. This story was written and drawn by Yoshihiro Togashi. It first appeared in a magazine called Weekly Shōnen Jump. The series is very popular with readers around the world. It has sold over 50 million copies in total. In 1993, it even won the 39th Shogakukan Manga Award.

The story follows a 14-year-old boy named Yusuke Urameshi. Yusuke is a street-brawling delinquent in the Human World. One day, he dies after trying to save a young boy from a car. His kind act surprises the Underworld. A woman named Botan meets his ghost by the Sanzu River. Koenma, the son of the ruler King Enma, offers Yusuke a test. If Yusuke passes, he can return to his body.

After he returns to life, Yusuke gets a new job. He becomes an Underworld Detective. His job is to investigate supernatural activity in the Human World. He uses a special power called the Rei Gun. This is a shot of aura fired from his index finger. As the story moves along, it focuses on martial arts battles. Yusuke fights in many big tournaments to test his strength. He often fights alongside his friends, Keiko, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei.

Yoshihiro Togashi began working on this series around November 1990. He wanted to write a fighting manga based on his interests. He liked horror films and Buddhist mythology. He even used a dictionary to find names for his characters. The name "YuYu Hakusho" means "Poltergeist Report." Togashi used drafting ink and Kabura pens to draw the pages. He sometimes drew faces in a very detailed or cartoony way.

This series has become a huge part of pop culture. It was turned into an anime television show. The show had 112 episodes and aired from 1992 to 1995. There are also animated films and video games. In North America, Viz Media helped share the manga with many people. The story uses different worlds like the Human World and the Demon Plane. These worlds are connected by spirits rather than technology.
