Bleach is a famous Japanese manga series created by Tite Kubo. It follows a teenager named Ichigo Kurosaki who lives in Karakura Town. Ichigo has a rare gift to see spirits. His life changes when he meets Rukia Kuchiki, a warrior known as a Soul Reaper. Soul Reapers are part of an ancient group that keeps worlds in balance. They protect people from evil spirits called Hollows. They also guide departed souls to the afterlife.

This story has become a huge media franchise. It includes an anime television series made by Pierrot. There are also four animated films and ten stage musicals. Many video games and even a live-action film exist too.

The story works through many big adventures. After Rukia is injured, she gives her powers to Ichigo. He becomes a Substitute Soul Reaper while staying a high school student. He works with friends like Orihime Inoue and Yasutora Sado. They fight many different types of enemies. One group is the Arrancar, which are Hollows that look like humans. Another group is the Quincies, an army that uses spiritual energy. Ichigo must use all his strength to protect his world. He even faces a powerful leader named Yhwach in a final battle.

Tite Kubo began working on this idea in the year 2000. He first wrote a short story called "Snipe." He originally wanted Soul Reapers to use guns. He later changed the title to Bleach because he wanted to use swords. He chose the name Bleach because it relates to the color white. The series started in Weekly Shōnen Jump in August 2001. It ran for fifteen years until August 2016. During this time, the story was collected into 74 volumes.

Bleach has reached a massive number of readers. By the year 2022, over 130 million copies were in circulation worldwide. This makes it one of the best-selling manga in history. In North America, a company called Viz Media began releasing it in 2004. The series won the 50th Shogakukan Manga Award in 2005. Kubo used many different languages to make his world feel large. For example, Hollows use Spanish names. The Quincies use German names. This helps readers tell the different groups apart.

Kubo drew inspiration from many places to build this world. He liked music, architecture, and different films. He even listened to rock music to help him draw action scenes. This helped him find a good rhythm for his art. The story also uses ideas from Japanese culture. It looks at how spirits and humans live together. Some parts of the story use themes from Shinto and Confucianism. Even the way characters fight was inspired by other manga like Saint Seiya.
