Bleach is a celebrated Japanese manga series created by Tite Kubo. It is a work of sequential art that explores the balance between different realms of existence. The story follows Ichigo Kurosaki, a teenager from Karakura Town who can perceive spirits. After meeting the warrior Rukia Kuchiki, Ichigo becomes a Substitute Soul Reaper. Soul Reapers are part of an ancient order that protects humanity from Hollows. Hollows are monstrous, lost souls that prey on the living and the dead. Soul Reapers also guide departed souls to the afterlife to maintain spiritual balance.

The narrative functions through complex conflicts involving various supernatural factions. Ichigo begins his journey after Rukia transfers her powers to him following an injury. He must balance his duties as a protector with his life as a high school student. He is joined by allies like Orihime Inoue, Yasutora "Chad" Sado, and the Quincy survivor Uryū Ishida. The story moves through several major arcs, such as the battle in the Soul Society to rescue Rukia. Later, Ichigo faces the Arrancar, which are humanoid Hollows led by the antagonist Aizen. The final conflict involves the Quincy army, known as the Wandenreich, led by Yhwach.

Kubo organized his world using distinct groups with unique characteristics. The Soul Reapers are the primary guardians, organized into the Thirteen Court Squads. The Arrancar represent a transformed type of Hollow that possesses human-like qualities. There are also the Vizards, who are former Soul Reapers who underwent Hollowfication. Another group is the Fullbringers, humans who possess supernatural abilities. Finally, the Quincies are a group that manipulates spiritual energy. To help readers distinguish these groups, Kubo used a multilingual naming scheme. Soul Reapers use terms from classical Japanese literature, while Arrancar use Spanish names. Quincies use German, and Fullbringers use English terms often referencing rock music.

The creation of Bleach began with Tite Kubo's interest in specific character designs. He originally wanted Soul Reapers to wear kimonos. His initial concept was a one-shot titled "Snipe," which featured Soul Reapers using guns. He eventually changed the title to Bleach to reflect the introduction of swords. He also considered the titles "Black" and "White" before choosing Bleach. The series was submitted to Weekly Shōnen Jump after his previous work, Zombiepowder., was canceled. Although the proposal was initially rejected, it was accepted for serialization in August 2001. The series was originally intended to run for only five years, but it continued for fifteen.

Bleach has achieved massive global success and significant cultural impact. The manga was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from August 2001 to August 2016. Its chapters were collected into 74 individual volumes. By the year 2022, the series had over 130 million copies in circulation worldwide. This high number makes it one of the best-selling manga in history. The series also won the 50th Shogakukan Manga Award in 2005. It has expanded into a large media franchise. This includes an anime series by Pierrot, four animated films, and ten stage musicals.

Kubo used several different influences to develop the series' unique style. He drew inspiration from manga like GeGeGe no Kitaro and Saint Seiya. He also incorporated elements from music, architecture, and film. To develop fight choreography, Kubo listened to rock music. This helped him establish a rhythmic flow for his panel transitions. He also used character design as a primary driver for the plot. When he faced creative challenges, he would introduce new characters to move the story forward. He enjoyed creating characters whose appearances contrasted with their true natures.

The series also explores deep cultural and religious themes. The plot incorporates traditional Japanese beliefs about spirits and their coexistence with humans. For example, the character Orihime Inoue has a backstory involving the spiritual nature of her brother. The series includes Shinto themes regarding the purification of evil spirits through rituals. Some scholars also see Confucian values and influences from Christianity and Caribbean Santería in the work. The Quincy characters specifically show influence from Roman Catholic Christian Orders of Knighthood. This is seen in their uniforms and the use of cross symbolism.
