One Piece is a massive Japanese manga series created by Eiichiro Oda. A manga is a style of Japanese comic book. The story follows Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, known as the Straw Hat Pirates. They sail the vast oceans to find a legendary treasure called the "One Piece." Finding this treasure would allow Luffy to claim the title of King of the Pirates. Since its debut in July 1997, the series has become a global phenomenon. It is published in the magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump.

The series takes place on a world called the Blue Planet. This world is mostly covered by the Blue Sea. A massive continental mountain range called the Red Line divides these oceans. Another major feature is the Grand Line, a sea that runs perpendicular to the Red Line. This area is bounded by the Calm Belt, where huge Sea Kings live. Traveling between these seas is very difficult. Characters must use unique methods like Reverse Mountain, where water flows uphill.

Many different races live on the Blue Planet. These include humans, giants, and merfolk. There are also dwarves, who are small like fairies. Other groups include the Snakeneck Tribe with long necks and the Minks, who are animal people. The world is governed by the World Government, an authoritarian organization. Its military branch is the Navy, which hunts pirates. A secret police force called Cipher Pol also serves the government. Meanwhile, a group called the Revolutionary Army works to overthrow this rule.

Supernatural elements play a major role in the adventures. Many characters gain powers by eating Devil Fruits. These mysterious fruits grant transformative abilities. For example, Luffy ate the Gum-Gum Fruit, which turned his body into rubber. However, there is a heavy cost for this power. Anyone who eats a Devil Fruit loses the ability to swim. They become weakened in any body of water. Another power is Haki, which uses willpower to enhance fighting and observation skills.

Eiichiro Oda drew inspiration from his childhood interest in pirates. He watched the animated series Vicky the Viking. He also studied real-life pirate biographies. This influenced characters like Marshall D. Teach, who is based on Edward "Blackbeard" Teach. Oda was also influenced by the manga series Dragon Ball. Before the series began, Oda wrote two short stories called Romance Dawn. The series faced early struggles and was rejected by Weekly Shōnen Jump three times. Eventually, editors approved the serialization due to the earnestness of Oda and his editor.

Oda is known for his intense work ethic. He draws all moving characters himself to maintain a consistent look. He often works from five in the morning until two the next day. The production involves writing storyboards and then inking the boards. The series has also expanded into a massive media franchise. Toei Animation produces an anime series and many feature films. Netflix released a live-action TV adaptation in 2023. There are also video games and trading card games available.

One Piece has achieved incredible commercial success. By March 2026, it had over 600 million copies in circulation. This makes it the best-selling manga series in history. It holds the Guinness World Record for the most copies published for the same comic series by one author. It was the best-selling manga for eleven straight years from 2008 to 2018. Every one of its more than 100 volumes has sold over 1 million copies. This is a feat no other series has matched. The story is now moving toward its final saga.
