Anpanman is a symbol of justice. He protects the world from various threats. His name comes from his unique appearance. His head is an anpan. An anpan is a Japanese pastry filled with sweet red bean paste, known as anko. In English, the name translates to "Bean Bun Man." He does not need to eat or drink to survive. Instead, the bean jam in his head provides him with energy.

Being a hero requires a specific process of care and renewal. Anpanman lives near a baker called Uncle Jam. Anpanman was born when a shooting star landed in Uncle Jam's oven. This event is sometimes called the "stars of life." Anpanman has specific physical weaknesses. Water and dirt can damage his head and make him weak. He wears a bubble-like helmet to stay dry in the rain. When his head is damaged or used to feed others, Uncle Jam must bake a new one. Once the new head is placed on his shoulders, the old head flies away.

Anpanman's world features many characters with bread-based identities. Each hero has unique traits and abilities. Currypanman has a head made of currypan, a pastry filled with hot curry. He is strong and can use hot curry as a weapon. Shokupanman has a head made of shoku pan, or sliced white bread. He is a level-headed thinker who uses a delivery van. Melonpanna has a head made of melon bread. She is a sensitive character who uses a gymnastics ribbon in battle. Even the youngest hero, Creampanna, has a head made of a cream bun.

Every hero must face villains to keep the stories exciting. The main antagonist is Baikinman. His name translates to "Bacteria Man." He is a germ from the "Germ Planet." Baikinman wants to spread bacteria and destroy Anpanman. He is a clever villain who builds machines to fight. His weakness is soap, which shrinks him to the size of a fly. He is often joined by Dokin-chan. She is a selfish and greedy character who sometimes shows kindness. Other villains include the Rot-Rot, which are henchmen that can rot Anpanman's head with mold.

The history of the series is deeply tied to the creator's life. During the Second World War, Takashi Yanase experienced starvation many times. These difficult experiences made him dream of eating an anpan. This personal memory inspired the creation of the hero. The franchise has seen incredible commercial success over the decades. In 2002, Anpanman became Japan's top-grossing character. He even overtook the famous character Hello Kitty. By 2013, the franchise had generated massive retail sales revenue. As of February 2019, the series had sold over 80 million books.
