It is celebrated globally for producing high-quality, original feature films. The studio aims to bring a fresh perspective to the animation industry. Its name is derived from the Italian word for a hot desert wind from the Sahara. This name was chosen by director Hayao Miyazaki. He also referenced the Caproni Ca.309, an Italian aircraft. Miyazaki hoped the studio would blow a new wind through the anime industry.

The production process at Studio Ghibli requires immense dedication and time. Producers aim to never compromise on the quality or content of their work. The creation of a film involves many precise technical steps. Artists must complete tasks like storyboard sketching and inking. They also focus on detailed painting and the selection of voice actors. Music plays a vital role in their storytelling. The composer Joe Hisaishi has provided soundtracks for most of Miyazaki's films. This musical collaboration helps define the emotional atmosphere of their movies.

Studio Ghibli has several distinct phases in its history. It began as part of the Tokuma Shoten era. The studio was founded on June 15, 1985. This occurred after the success of the 1984 film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. The founders acquired the assets of a company called Topcraft. Later, the studio entered an independent era. In April 2005, it was spun off from Tokuma Shoten. It re-established itself as an independent company with new headquarters. Recently, it entered the Nippon Television era. In October 2023, it became a subsidiary of Nippon Television Holdings, Inc.

The studio was established by three key figures. Directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata founded the company. They were joined by producer Toshio Suzuki. These three men had long professional histories together. They worked on films like The Great Adventure of Horus, Prince of the Sun in 1968. They also collaborated on the Panda! Go, Panda! films in 1972 and 1973. Suzuki had previously served as an editor at Animage magazine. This magazine maintains a close relationship with the studio today. It even features a regular section called "Ghibli Notes."

The financial and critical success of the studio is significant. Several Ghibli films are among the ten highest-grossing Japanese feature films. For example, Spirited Away is the fourth highest-grossing. It earned ¥31.68 billion in Japan and over US$380 million worldwide. The studio has received many prestigious international awards. These include two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature. They also hold a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award. In 2004, the studio received a Special Golden Osella for Howl's Moving Castle. This was the only time the award went to a production studio.

Many iconic characters and films define the Ghibli brand. The mascot is Totoro from the 1988 film My Neighbor Totoro. Totoro is a giant spirit inspired by cats and raccoon dogs, known as tanuki. Other major films include Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, and The Boy and the Heron. The studio also produces various other media. This includes short subjects, television commercials, and television films. One such film is Ocean Waves, which was the first feature-length film created for television. The studio is also known for its strict "no-edits" policy for international licensing.

Studio Ghibli connects deeply with its audience through physical spaces. The Ghibli Museum opened in Mitaka, Tokyo, in October 2001. It features exhibits and exclusive short animations. Additionally, the Ghibli Park opened on November 22, 2022. These locations allow fans to experience the studio's world directly. The studio's influence extends into the broader animation field. It has inspired new creators and shaped how the world views Japanese animation. Even as leadership transitions occur, the studio remains a pillar of global culture.
