Over a career spanning six decades, he directed 30 feature films. He was much more than a director. Kurosawa acted as a writer, producer, and editor for his projects. This total involvement allowed him to develop a bold and dynamic style. His work blended Western cinematic influences with a uniquely Japanese perspective. Today, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential filmmakers ever created.

Kurosawa's deep understanding of film came from years of intense training. He began his career at the P.C.L. studio, which later became the Toho studio. He served as an assistant director for five years starting in 1936. His mentor, Kajirō Yamamoto, helped him master the many moving parts of production. Kurosawa performed tasks like stage construction and film development. He also handled location scouting, script polishing, and lighting. He even managed dubbing and editing to ensure quality.

Kurosawa's filmmaking process was defined by his skill in screenwriting. He realized early on that writing was a vital part of directing. He wrote or co-wrote every single one of his films. This skill also allowed him to earn money by writing scripts for other directors. This practice continued as a lucrative sideline well into the 1960s. He often used realistic methods to help his actors perform. For example, during the filming of *The Most Beautiful*, he had actresses live in a real factory. They ate factory food and used character names to find authenticity.

His journey to the top of the film industry involved several distinct stages. He first attempted to make a living as a painter. However, he eventually turned to film after joining P.C.L. in 1936. His directorial debut came in 1943 with the action film *Sanshiro Sugata*. This film was a success despite facing strict wartime censorship. Following World War II, his work shifted toward democratic ideals. He sought to create films that respected the individual and the self. This era helped cement his reputation as a major talent in Japan.

Kurosawa's career is marked by legendary collaborations and massive global success. In 1948, he directed *Drunken Angel*. This film marked the start of his partnership with actor Toshiro Mifune. The two men would collaborate on 15 more films together. Another turning point was the 1950 film *Rashomon*. It won the Golden Lion at the 1951 Venice Film Festival. This victory was huge because it opened Western markets to Japanese cinema. It paved the way for many other Japanese filmmakers to find international fame.

Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, Kurosawa was incredibly productive. He directed approximately one film per year during this peak period. This era produced many of his most highly regarded works. Notable examples include *Seven Samurai* in 1954 and *Throne of Blood* in 1957. He also directed *The Hidden Fortress* in 1958 and *Yojimbo* in 1961. Even as he became less prolific after the 1960s, his quality remained high. His later films, like *Kagemusha* (1980) and *Ran* (1985), still received great praise.

He was cited as one of five people who improved Asia in the 20th century. His life and films continue to be studied through biographies and critical studies.
