The series is famous for its deep themes and unique art. It helped define the look and feel of modern anime. Many creators today still look to Tezuka's work for inspiration.

The story follows a powerful android named Astro Boy. He was created by a scientist named Dr. Umataro Tenma. Tenma built the robot to replace his son, Tobio, who died in an accident. Astro is unique because he possesses human emotions. He strives to be more human and emotive. He acts as an interface between people and machines.

Astro has seven incredible powers. He has 100,000 horsepower of strength and jet flight. He can use high-intensity lights from his eyes. He also has adjustable hearing and instant language translation. Finally, he has a retractable machine gun in his hips and a high IQ.

Astro's life involves many different stages and challenges. In some versions, Dr. Tenma rejects him because Astro cannot grow older. This leads Astro to a robot circus run by Hamegg. Eventually, Professor Ochanomizu saves him from this life. The Professor becomes his legal guardian and a surrogate father. He even creates a robotic family for Astro. This allows the young android to live a life similar to a human boy. Astro then uses his skills to fight crime and injustice. He often battles robots that have gone berserk or alien invaders.

The history of the series began in April 1951. Astro first appeared as a supporting character in a magazine called Shōnen. He was part of a series titled Atom Taishi. Tezuka later developed him into the main character of his own series. The main Astro Boy manga ran from 1952 to 1968. It was published in 112 chapters. These chapters were later collected into 23 volumes.

Tezuka often re-drew older chapters to make them look more modern. He also used a "Star System" for his characters. This meant characters from his other works would play roles in Astro Boy.

The significance of Astro Boy is seen in its massive numbers. The 23 collected volumes have sold over 100 million copies worldwide. This makes it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. The 1963 anime was also a major success in Japan and the United States. The franchise has also been a leader in mass merchandising. This includes action figures, clothing, and trading cards. By 2004, the franchise had generated huge sales from these products.

Astro Boy even became Japan's envoy for overseas safety in 2007.

There are many notable examples of how the series has changed. The 1963 anime was the first popular Japanese animated television series. It pioneered the aesthetics of the anime industry. Later, the series was remade as New Mighty Atom in the 1980s. A computer-animated film was also released in 2009. Different English versions have used different names for the characters. For example, Dr. Tenma was called Dr. Boynton in some versions. The translator Frederik L. Schodt worked to keep the original Japanese names in his English version. He wanted to respect the history of the setting.

Astro Boy connects to many broader ideas in culture and technology. It explores how advanced technology coexists with human society. The stories often deal with the struggles of living in an analog world. Tezuka used the character to explore the relationship between man and machine. The series also shows how art can evolve through different media. It moved from print manga to television anime and then to global films. This journey shows how a single character can influence the entire world of entertainment.
