My Hero Academia is a highly successful Japanese manga series. It was written and illustrated by Kōhei Horikoshi. The series was serialized in the magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump from July 2014 to August 2024. Its chapters were later collected into 42 volumes. The story is set in a unique world where superpowers are a part of daily life. These powers are called Quirks.

In this world, approximately 80% of the human population possesses a Quirk. These abilities result from recent human evolution. Quirks vary greatly in their scale and function. Some people have very small powers. Others possess near god-like abilities. Most Quirks manifest shortly after a person's toddler years. However, using a Quirk often comes with a physical drawback. This might include a usage limit or even physical self-injury. Some Quirks also cause permanent physical mutations. People with these mutations are called heteromorphs. They sometimes face discrimination because of their appearance. The remaining 20% of the population is known as Quirkless. They often face social challenges as well.

Society has changed significantly to accommodate these powers. Japan has emerged as a leading country due to its high percentage of strong Quirks. The United States also holds significant influence with its large Quirk population. Within this society, specialized individuals called Heroes work to maintain order. They cooperate with authorities to perform rescue operations. They also apprehend criminals known as Villains. Heroes often operate out of Hero Agencies. Some agencies are owned by a single Hero who employs Sidekicks. Other agencies are owned by a group of heroes working as a team. Highly successful heroes gain celebrity status and are ranked on the Hero Billboard Charts.

The story follows Izuku Midoriya, a boy born Quirkless. Despite his lack of powers, he dreams of becoming a hero. He idolizes All Might, the world's greatest hero. One day, All Might witnesses Midoriya attempting to save a friend from a villain. This act inspires All Might to pass his own Quirk to Midoriya. This specific power is called One For All. It allows a user to stockpile raw power and pass it to others. Midoriya then enrolls in U.A. High School in Shizuoka Prefecture. This is the most prestigious school for training future heroes. Students there study combat and rescue operations. They also learn to manage the drawbacks of their specific Quirks.

Training at U.A. High School involves many different stages. Students participate in events like sports festivals to show their skills. These events allow Pro Heroes to scout potential interns. Students can also receive help from companies that build superhero suits. To work legally, students must pass the Provisional Hero License Exam. This gives them a temporary amateur license. There are two main types of internships available. The first is a Hero Agency Internship. Here, a student shadows a Pro Hero for one week. The second is a Hero Work-Study. This allows licensed students to function as actual sidekicks. This experience helps them get noticed by full-time employers.

My Hero Academia has expanded into a massive media franchise. It includes several spin-off manga like My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. The series also includes light novels, stage plays, and video games. An anime television series produced by Bones has aired eight seasons. This adaptation runs from April 2016 to December 2025. There are also four animated films, including Two Heroes and Heroes Rising. Ten original video animations, or OVAs, have been released. A live-action film by Legendary Entertainment is currently in development. The franchise uses many pop culture references to Western superhero comics.

The series has achieved massive commercial success. By April 2024, the manga had over 100 million copies in circulation. This number includes sales from various spin-off series. The manga has appeared on The New York Times best-seller list several times. It has received many prestigious awards. These include the Sugoi Japan Award and the Harvey Award for Best Manga. Critics have praised the series for its art, characters, and storytelling. It is widely considered one of the best series of the 2010s.
