It was written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. The story is set in a world where humanity lives within three massive, concentric walls. These walls protect the inhabitants from Titans. Titans are gigantic, man-eating humanoids that threaten human survival. The series explores themes of freedom, war, and the cycle of conflict. It has become a global phenomenon in both print and animation.

To survive against the Titans, the military uses specialized technology. The most important tool is Vertical Maneuvering Equipment, often called Omni-Directional Maneuvering Gear or ODM gear. This system uses gas-powered propulsion and waist-mounted grappling hooks. It allows soldiers to move through three-dimensional space with great speed. Soldiers also use swords made of ultrahard steel to fight. Later in the series, they develop Thunder Spears. These are weapons that function similarly to rocket launchers.

Titans are categorized into several distinct types based on their behavior and power. Pure Titans are the most common and are considered the weakest. They follow predictable patterns, which makes them easier for soldiers to fight. Abnormal Titans are also Pure Titans, but their behavior is less predictable. This unpredictability makes them much harder to combat. The most powerful are the Nine Titans, also known as Titan Shifters. These are individuals who can transform between human and Titan forms. Each of the nine has unique abilities, such as the Colossal, Armored, or Beast Titan.

The history of the story involves a complex web of secrets. The inhabitants, known as Eldians, believe they are the last remnants of civilization. They have lived in peace behind the walls for about a century. However, the story reveals that the Eldians live on an island called Paradis. They are actually an enclosed group of people. They are viewed as enemies by a nation called Marley. This history is tied to the original King Karl Fritz and the Subjects of Ymir. The truth is hidden behind a basement in the town of Shiganshina.

The narrative follows Eren Yeager, a boy from Shiganshina. In the year 845, the Colossal and Armored Titans breached Wall Maria. This event caused the destruction of his home and the death of his mother. Eren joined the military alongside his friends, Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert. As the story progresses, the scale of the conflict grows significantly. The characters move from fighting mindless giants to engaging in complex political warfare. They eventually face the "Rumbling," which is a massive march of Wall Titans.

The commercial success of the series is immense. The manga was serialized in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine from 2009 to 2021. It was collected into 34 individual volumes. By November 2023, the series had over 140 million copies in circulation. This makes it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. The series has also earned prestigious honors. These include the Kodansha Manga Award, the Attilio Micheluzzi Award, and the Harvey Award.

The series has also been adapted into a major anime television production. Wit Studio produced the first three seasons of the show. MAPPA took over the production for the fourth and final season. The anime broadcast began in April 2013 and continued through 2023. The production involved many episodes and special releases. The anime helps bring the intense action and emotional depth of Isayama's work to life. It remains a significant part of modern global pop culture.
