Berserk is a highly influential Japanese manga series. It is a dark fantasy work created by Kentaro Miura. The series is set in a world inspired by medieval Europe. It follows the lives of Guts, a powerful swordsman, and Griffith, the leader of the Band of the Hawk. The story explores themes of revenge, ambition, and fate. This series is famous for its deep storytelling and extremely detailed artwork. It has become one of the most significant works in the fantasy genre.

The narrative follows a complex chain of cause and effect. Guts begins as a wandering warrior after a difficult childhood. His combat skills eventually lead him to join Griffith and the Band of the Hawk. As Griffith gains political power, Guts decides to leave to find his own purpose. This departure triggers a downfall for Griffith, leading to his arrest and torture. The story reaches a turning point during a supernatural event called the Eclipse. During this event, Griffith makes a choice to sacrifice his comrades to achieve godhood. This choice transforms him into a demonic being named Femto and leaves Guts to fight for survival.

The series features several distinct stages and character evolutions. Guts begins as a lone mercenary before joining a structured military group. Later, he becomes the Black Swordsman, a vengeful warrior traveling with an elf named Puck. He eventually gains the Berserker Armor, a tool that increases his strength but threatens his sanity. The world also shifts from a grounded medieval setting to one where the physical and astral realms merge. This transition occurs when Griffith establishes the city of Falconia. These shifts change how the characters interact with magic and demonic beings known as Apostles.

Kentaro Miura began developing this world in the late 1980s. He published a 48-page prototype in 1988 through Gekkan ComiComi. The official serialization began in 1989 in a Hakusensha magazine. In 1992, the series moved to the semimonthly magazine Young Animal. Miura worked on the series until his death in May 2021. Following his passing, the series resumed in June 2022. It is now supervised by his childhood friend, Kouji Mori, and his assistants at Studio Gaga. They work together to continue the story according to Miura's vision.

The scale of Berserk's success is reflected in many impressive figures. By August 2025, the manga had over 70 million copies in circulation worldwide. This massive number makes it one of the best-selling manga series in history. The story has been collected into 43 volumes as of August 2025. The series has also been adapted into various media. A 25-episode anime aired from 1997 to 1998. A trilogy of theatrical films was released between 2012 and 2013. Another 24-episode anime series was broadcast in 2016 and 2017.

Miura drew from a wide variety of creative sources to build his world. He used the aesthetic of medieval Europe but added anachronistic technology, like Guts' arm cannon. His art was influenced by the compositions of Katsuhiro Otomo and the surrealism of M. C. Escher. He also looked to films like Mad Max for character inspiration. The dark atmosphere was shaped by various fantasy novels and films like Hellraiser. Miura aimed for realistic creature designs to make the supernatural elements feel more grounded. He wanted to create a "muddy" and dark world that felt different from typical video game fantasy.

Berserk connects to broader discussions about the evolution of the fantasy genre. Miura sought to create a "dark hero" at a time when the genre was often lighter. He blended historical settings with high fantasy to create a unique atmosphere. The series shows how personal trauma and massive political shifts can intersect. It also explores the relationship between human ambition and cosmic forces. Through its complex characters and intense world, Berserk remains a landmark in global manga history.
