Berserk is a famous Japanese manga series about a dark fantasy world.

It tells the story of a warrior named Guts and a leader named Griffith. Guts is a skilled swordsman who carries a very large sword. Griffith leads a group of fighters called the Band of the Hawk. The story follows Guts as he seeks revenge after a great betrayal. This series is loved for its deep characters and amazing art. Many readers find the dark setting very interesting and moving.

The story moves through many difficult and intense moments. Guts begins his journey as a wandering warrior. He eventually joins the Band of the Hawk after a battle with Griffith. As they travel, Guts meets other characters like the commander Casca. The plot involves a dark event called the Eclipse. During this event, Griffith makes a choice that changes everything. Guts must then fight against demonic beings called Apostles. He uses a special tool called the Berserker Armor to help him. This armor gives him great strength but is very dangerous.

Kentaro Miura created this world starting in the late 1980s. He first showed a prototype of the story in 1988. The series began being published in 1989 in a magazine by Hakusensha. Later, it moved to a magazine called Young Animal in 1992. Miura worked on the series for many years until he died in May 2021. After his death, his friend Kouji Mori took over. Mori works with Studio Gaga to continue the story. They want to make sure the series stays true to Miura's ideas.

There are many impressive numbers behind this series. By August 2025, the manga had over 70 million copies sold worldwide. This makes it one of the best-selling manga series ever. The story has been collected into 43 different volumes. There are also anime shows based on the books. One show had 25 episodes and aired from 1997 to 1998. There is also a trilogy of movies released in 2012 and 2013. In 2002, the series won the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.

Miura drew inspiration from many different places. He liked the look of medieval Europe for his setting. He also looked at the art of M. C. Escher. Some of his ideas came from movies like Mad Max. He wanted to create a hero who felt real and strong. He did not want to make a perfect hero. Instead, he wanted a character who faced many hard jobs. This helped make the world of Berserk feel very special to fans. It shows how art can blend many different ideas together.
