Golgo 13 is a legendary Japanese manga series that has achieved massive global success. Written and illustrated by Takao Saito, the series began publication in October 1968. It is currently recognized as the oldest manga series still in continuous publication. The series holds a Guinness World Record for having the highest number of volumes for a manga series. With a cumulative circulation of 300 million copies in various formats, it is one of the best-selling manga in history. The stories follow a professional hitman known for his incredible skills and mysterious nature.

The protagonist is a man named Duke Togo, though he is most famous by his alias, Golgo 13. He is a professional hitman for hire who possesses 100% accuracy with a sniper rifle. His true identity remains a complete mystery to the world. No intelligence agency has any record of his real name, nationality, age, or permanent address. He is a quiet, stoic character who shows no emotion while performing his assignments. He will accept any job from anyone who can afford his services, ranging from targeting terrorists to other high-stakes missions. Because his work often leads to retaliation, he must constantly watch his back for other assassins.

The name "Golgo 13" carries deep symbolic meaning. "Golgo" is short for Golgotha, which is the location of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The number 13 is widely considered an unlucky number in many cultures. This theme is reflected in the series logo, which depicts a skeleton wearing a crown of thorns. While the character's past is unknown, the stories are grounded in current events. Interestingly, although the world changes around him, Golgo 13 does not appear to age significantly over the decades. However, he has survived many battles, leaving him with various scars across his body.

Creating a long-running series like this requires a highly organized production system. Takao Saito developed a specific method to manage the workload. The editorial department would first write a script for the story. Saito then created the page layouts and personally inked the faces of the main characters. To ensure the stories felt realistic, he performed extensive research on technology. Assistants were employed to draw the backgrounds and other secondary elements. Other writers contributed to the series over time, including Kazuo Koike and Yoichi Funado. Even Saito's editor, Takashi Nagasaki, wrote stories for the manga using the pen name Keishi Edogawa.

The history of the series is marked by both great achievement and occasional controversy. Golgo 13 won the 1975 Shogakukan Manga Award and the Grand Prize at the 2002 Japan Cartoonists Association Awards. However, some stories have not been reprinted because they were considered offensive or libelous. For example, one 1986 story caused complaints from the Iranian embassy, and another in 1989 involved a story about a Hollywood actor. In 2013, Saito mentioned he had planned an ending for the series. He believed that because the manga had lasted so long, it no longer belonged solely to him, but to the readers.

As of December 2025, the series has reached a massive scale with 219 volumes published in certain editions. The series has also expanded into many other forms of media. There have been two live-action feature films, including a 1973 production filmed in Iran. The series has been adapted into several anime projects, including a 1971 television series and a 1983 animated film that used early CGI. There are also six video games. Some of these were lightgun arcade games developed by Namco, where players used a special rifle to aim at targets on the screen.

Today, the legacy of Takao Saito continues through the Saito Production group. After Saito passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2021 at the age of 84, the group took over the work. They continue to publish new chapters with the assistance of the Big Comics editorial department. The franchise has also branched out into spin-off manga. These include a series about a character named Dave McCartney and a gag comedy set at a modern-day campsite. Through these various projects, Golgo 13 remains a significant cultural phenomenon in Japan and beyond.
