YuYu Hakusho is a highly influential Japanese manga series. A manga is a style of comic book originating from Japan. This specific series was written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi. It was serialized in the magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump from December 1990 to July 1994. The series consists of 175 chapters collected into 19 volumes. It is recognized as one of the best-selling manga series of all time. It has over 50 million copies in circulation worldwide. In 1993, the series won the 39th Shogakukan Manga Award.

The narrative follows Yusuke Urameshi, a 14-year-old delinquent. In a rare act of altruism, Yusuke is killed by a car while saving a child. His death surprises the Underworld because he was not expected to act so selflessly. A woman named Botan, who pilots the Sanzu River, meets his ghost. She explains that there was no place prepared for him in heaven or hell. Koenma, the son of King Enma, offers Yusuke a chance to return to life. This revival depends on Yusuke passing a series of difficult tests. He succeeds with the help of his friends, Keiko Yukimura and Kazuma Kuwabara.

After his revival, Yusuke is appointed as an Underworld Detective. His primary duty is to investigate supernatural activity within the Ningenkai, or Human World. He uses a specialized technique called the Rei Gun. This is a shot of aura fired mentally from his index finger. The story structure evolves from occult detective fiction into a focus on martial arts. Yusuke participates in several major combat events. These include a tournament held by the martial arts master Genkai and the Dark Tournament. In the Dark Tournament, Yusuke leads Team Urameshi against various demons.

The series explores a complex cosmology involving three parallel planes of existence. These are the Ningenkai (Human World), the Reikai (Underworld), and the Makai (Demon Plane). Togashi conceptualized these worlds as places connected by spirits rather than technology. The plot deepens as Yusuke discovers his own demonic lineage. He learns he possesses a recessive gene from an ancestor. This discovery leads him to the Demon Plane. There, he must navigate political instability caused by the death of the ruler, Raizen. Yusuke eventually proposes a tournament to determine the new ruler of the Demon Plane.

Yoshihiro Togashi began conceptualizing the series around November 1990. He drew inspiration from his interests in horror films, the occult, and Buddhist mythology. He originally considered the title "How to be a Ghost." He later proposed "YuYu-Ki," but chose "YuYu Hakusho," meaning "Poltergeist Report," due to existing titles. To name his characters, Togashi used a dictionary to find appealing kanji. For example, the name Yusuke Urameshi is a pun. He also drew inspiration from professional baseball players for the name Kazuma Kuwabara.

The production of the manga was physically demanding for the author. Togashi used drafting ink and Kabura pens for his artwork. His drawing style shifted from using screentone to a more minimalist approach. He often adjusted his detail levels, using sketchy or cartoony styles for action scenes. Togashi faced significant personal stress and health issues due to overwork. He sometimes created entire manuscripts by himself. He noted that inconsistent sleep during the Dark Tournament arc caused him to become very ill. Despite these challenges, he completed the series in July 1994.

Beyond the manga, the franchise has expanded into many different media. An anime television adaptation was produced by Studio Pierrot and Fuji Television. This series contained 112 episodes and aired from October 1992 to January 1995. The franchise also includes two animated films and several original video animations, known as OVAs. Other versions include a live-action television series and various video games. In North America, Viz Media licensed the manga for serialization. This helped bring the series to a wide international audience between 2003 and 2010.
