The story was written and drawn by Kazuki Takahashi. It first appeared in a magazine called Weekly Shōnen Jump. This series ran from September 1996 until March 2004. Takahashi wrote the story in thirty-eight different volumes. The series follows a teenager named Yugi Mutou. Yugi is a shy high school student who loves games. He works to solve the Millennium Puzzle, which is an ancient Egyptian artifact.

Solving the puzzle changes Yugi's life in a big way. The puzzle allows a mysterious spirit to live inside him. This spirit is actually a nameless Pharaoh from Ancient Egypt. The Pharaoh lost his memories when he was sealed in the puzzle. This spirit has the personality of a gambler. He helps Yugi face challenges by playing games. The characters often face trials called the Shadow Games. These games can be very intense for the players. Yugi and his friends work together to help the Pharaoh find his lost memories.

As the story moves forward, the focus shifts to a specific game. This game is called Duel Monsters. Players use cards with fantasy monsters to battle one another. This is known as a mock battle between opponents. Takahashi did not originally plan to make the story about cards. He chose the game because it got a great response from readers. The card game became so popular that it turned into a real-world Trading Card Game. This game is based on the fictional Duel Monsters from the manga. People all over the world now play this game in real life.

Kazuki Takahashi had many ideas when he created this world. He wanted to focus on the theme of battle. However, he wanted a battle where no one actually hits anyone. He decided that games were the perfect way to show this. He also wanted to show the importance of communication. He believed that playing games together helps people connect. Takahashi used the Japanese word yūjō, which means friendship, to name his characters. He named the main characters Yūgi and Jōnouchi. He wanted to show that everyone has a hidden strength inside them. This strength can come out when people believe in themselves and their friends.

Yu-Gi-Oh! has grown into many different types of media. There are many anime series based on the manga. The first anime aired in 1998 and was made by Toei Animation. A second series called Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters aired from 2000 to 2004. There are also many spin-off shows like Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's. The franchise includes several movies and many video games. It has become one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time. Fans can enjoy the story through books, television, and even real card matches. This makes the world of Yugi and the Pharaoh very large and lasting.
