In this shared universe, humans live alongside many different creatures called Pokémon. These creatures have special powers and come in many forms. For example, Pikachu is a yellow, mouse-like species with a lightning bolt tail. Pikachu can blast electric charges through the air.

There are many species to find. The first games had 151 different types. By early 2026, there were 1,025 different Pokémon species. Most of these are based on real animals or mythical creatures from old stories.

You play the role of a Pokémon Trainer. Your main goal is to travel and explore the world. You also try to catch many different species to fill a guide called a Pokédex.

To catch a Pokémon, you use a tool called a Poké Ball. You must first weaken the Pokémon in a battle. Then, you throw the ball at it. The Pokémon turns into energy and goes inside the device. If it works, the Pokémon is now under your command. You can also train your team to battle other Pokémon. These battles are friendly and not violent. Pokémon do not die; they just faint and go to a Pokémon Center to feel better.

The idea for this world came from a man named Satoshi Tajiri.

He was born in 1965 in a suburb of Tokyo called Machida. As a young boy, he loved exploring ponds and fields to catch insects. Later, as cities grew, much of that nature was lost. Tajiri wanted to create a game that felt like those summer days of discovery. He also liked watching shows with small monsters in capsules. This helped him imagine how to catch and store Pokémon in a game.

Building the franchise took a lot of teamwork. Tajiri started a group called Game Freak in 1986. He worked with an artist named Ken Sugimori and a composer named Junichi Masuda. They released the first games on the Game Boy on 27 February 1996.

The games were huge hits and led to a global craze called "Pokémania." Today, several companies work together to manage the brand. Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures are the main owners. They formed The Pokémon Company in 1998 to help manage things in Asia.

Pokémon is everywhere in our world today. It is one of the best-selling video game franchises ever. You can find it in animated films, manga books, and trading cards.

In the summer of 2016, a new craze started with a game called Pokémon Go. This game uses augmented reality to let people play outside. Whether you are playing on a console or using a phone, the goal remains the same. You explore, you catch, and you learn about amazing new creatures.
