Solving the puzzle lets a spirit live inside him. This spirit is a great game player. The spirit is actually a nameless Pharaoh from Egypt.

The characters play a game called Duel Monsters. They use cards with fantasy monsters to duel. This card game is very popular in real life. It is also on TV in many anime series. Takahashi wanted to show the power of friendship. He named the main characters after the Japanese word for friendship. He also wanted to show that everyone has hidden strength. If you believe in yourself and your friends, you can face hard times. The series has become a very big media franchise. It includes many shows, movies, and video games.
