Kenshin lives by a very important vow. He promised to never take another life again. To follow this rule, he carries a special weapon. It is a reverse-bladed katana, which is a sword with the sharp edge turned around. This allows him to fight without killing anyone. He eventually meets a woman named Kamiya Kaoru. She runs a dojo, which is a school for martial arts. Kenshin stays there and makes many lifelong friends. These friends include Sagara Sanosuke and the young Myōjin Yahiko.

Nobuhiro Watsuki wanted to make something different. He wanted a series with a more serious tone. He first wrote short stories called one-shots in 1992 and 1993. These were like tests for his big idea. He even experimented with many different titles for the series. One title he thought about was Nishin Kenshin. The main story finally began in Weekly Shōnen Jump in April 1994. It ran for several years until September 1999. The chapters were collected into 28 different volumes.

This series became a huge success in Japan and around the world. By the year 2019, over 72 million copies were in circulation. This makes it one of the best-selling manga series ever. Many people love the historical setting and the character designs. The story has been turned into many other things. There is an anime television series that aired in the late 1990s. There are also movies and video games for the PlayStation. Even light novels and guidebooks have been published.

Kenshin's story connects to real history and personal growth. The setting is based on the Bakumatsu period in Japan. Watsuki used real historical groups like the Shinsengumi to inspire his characters. Kenshin must learn to be strong without becoming a cold killer again. He even trains with his old master, Hiko Seijūrō, to learn new skills. The story shows how people can change for the better. In the end, Kenshin finds peace with himself and his family.
