A manga is a type of comic book. This series follows the daily lives of the Isono and Fuguta families. It focuses on the funny and lighthearted moments of family life. Many people in Japan love these stories. They feel like a warm look at a simpler time. The stories show how much joy can come from small things. For example, the final comic was about a happy double yolk in an egg.

The stories work by showing everyday situations in Tokyo. The main character, Sazae, is a very cheerful woman. She is a housewife who sometimes works as a maid. She has a special hairstyle called a Victory roll. This style was very popular in the past. Sazae is often goofy and talkative. Her family is quite large and full of different people. There is her father, Namihei, who is very protective of one single hair on his head. There is also her brother, Katsuo, who is an 11-year-old boy. He loves playing soccer and baseball but dislikes his homework.

Machiko Hasegawa created this series many years ago. She first published it in a local paper on April 22, 1946. Later, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper wanted to publish her work. Hasegawa moved to Tokyo in 1949 to make this happen. She even said her characters moved from Kyūshū to Tokyo too. The first strip for the Asahi Shimbun appeared on November 30, 1949. Hasegawa continued drawing the series until she retired. She published the very last comic on February 21, 1974.

This series has reached a huge number of readers. By 1999, over 86 million copies were in circulation. This makes it one of the best-selling manga series ever. The stories also became a famous anime television show. This show began airing in Japan in October 1969. It is produced by a company named Eiken. The show is very special because it holds a Guinness World Record. It is the longest-running animated television series in the world. It has also been made into radio shows and plays.

Sazae-san connects to history and modern culture in many ways. The characters represent a modern Japanese family after World War II. Sazae was a very liberated woman for her time. She often bossed around her husband, Masuo. This was new because many neighbors thought men should lead the home. Today, many people watch the anime to feel nostalgic. It represents a time before modern technology changed everything. It shows a version of society that feels very traditional. Even though the themes were liberal, they feel like a bygone era now.
