Junji Ito is a famous Japanese manga artist. Manga are books that use art and words to tell stories. He is best known for creating horror stories that feel very strange. Many people call him an iconic artist because of his unique style.

His work often explores big ideas like cosmic horror. This is a type of story about scary things in the universe. He also uses body horror in his drawings. This shows how the mind can make scary things feel real.

Ito uses many different ways to build his stories. He often draws from his own life and fears. For example, his story Slug Girl came from looking in a mirror. He thought his tongue looked like a slug. His story The Hanging Balloons came from a dream he had as a child.

He also uses his science training to make his art look real. He studied medical books to learn how muscles look. He even used the way he whittled pencils for dental work to help him draw.

Ito grew up in the Japanese countryside near Nagano. He was born on July 31, 1963, in Sakashita. As a young boy, he loved reading manga magazines. His sisters read authors like Kazuo Umezu and Shinichi Koga. These stories inspired him to start drawing at age four.

He lived in a house with an underground tunnel. The tunnel had many spider crickets inside. He later used these memories to help create his spooky worlds.

Before he was a full-time artist, Ito had a different job. He worked as a dental technician starting in 1984. He spent three years doing this work while he drew manga as a hobby. In 1987, he won an honorable mention in the Kazuo Umezu Prize. This was for a short story that later became his famous series, Tomie.

Tomie is about a girl who seems to live forever. This idea came from the death of a classmate. Ito felt strange that the boy disappeared from the world.

Ito has won many big prizes for his amazing talent. He has won four Eisner Awards. These are very important awards for comic book creators. He won for his work on Frankenstein in 2019. He also won for stories called Remina and Venus in the Blind Spot.

In 2023, he received the Inkpot Award at San Diego Comic-Con. His stories are so popular they are made into movies and anime shows. Many people around the world now know his name.
