He spent his life studying and writing tanka. Tanka are a special kind of short poem. Sasaki was a child prodigy, which means he was very talented at a young age. His father, Hirotsuna, taught him the basics of poetry. He even helped him learn many old verses to memorize. Sasaki decided to follow his father's wish. He chose to devote his whole life to waka poetry. He did this by researching old poems and writing new ones.

Sasaki worked in many different ways to share poetry. In 1894, he wrote a long poem about a war. This poem became very popular in Japan. He also started a group for writers called the Chikuhakukai. This group published a journal called Kokoro no Hana. That name means "Flower of the Heart." The journal helped him share his ideas about poetry. It also helped him teach new poets like Kawada Jun. Today, this is the oldest poetry monthly in Japan.

His career was full of many great books and studies. In 1903, he published his first collection called Omoigusa. This name means "Grasses of Thoughts." He went on to publish eleven more collections of tanka. Some of these books had names like Shingetsu, which means "New Moon." He also worked with his father on big research projects. In 1915, they published a study of medieval poetry. Later, he led a team to make a guide for the Man'yōshū. This guide is still used by scholars today.

Sasaki received many honors for his hard work. In 1934, he joined the prestigious Imperial Academy. He was the very first person to get the Order of Culture in 1937. That same year, he joined the Japan Art Academy. He even became a teacher for the Imperial Family. He taught Empress Teimei how to write poetry. He also served as a judge for poetry contests. These roles showed how much people respected his skill.

Sasaki lived in several beautiful parts of Japan. He was born in Mie prefecture. Later, he lived in Tokyo and moved to Kamakura in 1921. He also had a home in Atami, which is a hot spring resort. He died in 1963 and is buried in Tokyo. People still remember him in his home city of Suzuka. A museum was built there to hold his old papers.
