Southern All Stars is a famous rock band from Japan.

They are known for making music that people love to sing along to. The band includes Keisuke Kuwata on vocals and guitar. Yuko Hara plays the keyboards and also sings. Other members play the bass and the drums.

They have stayed very popular for many decades. This group has sold more than 47 million albums and singles in Japan. They have even had 44 songs on the Oricon Top 100 charts at the same time. This is a very rare and impressive feat in the music world.

Making their music involves a lot of hard work and skill. In the early days, the band members wore strange and funny costumes. They used these eccentric outfits to catch people's attention on TV. Later, they focused on making beautiful pop ballads. One famous song is "Itoshi no Ellie," which is a slow and pretty song. This song helped people see them as serious musicians.

Sometimes the band takes a break called a hiatus. During these times, members work on their own solo music projects. They always come back together to make new songs for their fans.

The band began in Kanagawa in 1975. Before they had their permanent name, they tried many different ones. They once called themselves the "Onsen Anma Momohiki Band." Keisuke Kuwata started a group of students at Aoyama Gakuin University in 1974. This group was a prototype for what would become the band.

They finally chose the name Southern All Stars in 1975. A friend suggested the name based on southern rock music. This helped the band find their true identity and style.

Many important dates mark their long journey. Their first big song, "Katte ni Sindbad," came out in 1978. This song reached number three on the charts in the autumn. In 1990, they released a soundtrack that sold over one million copies. Their song "Tsunami," released in 2000, was a massive hit. It sold over 2.9 million units and won a Japan Record Award.

In 1998, their double album "Umi no Yeah!!" became the best-selling double album in Japanese history. These numbers show how much people enjoy their music.

You can hear the influence of Southern All Stars everywhere in Japan. Their music connects different styles like rock and pop. For example, their song "Manatsu no Kajitsu" was used in a movie. Other singers in different countries have even covered their songs. This means people in places like Hong Kong or the Philippines sing their melodies too.

They have been ranked as one of the most influential musicians in Japan. Even when they change their sound, they remain a huge part of culture. Their songs bring people together through many different years.
