Their name stands for "Sports Music Assemble People." The group had five members: Masahiro Nakai, Takuya Kimura, Goro Inagaki, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, and Shingo Katori. They were first formed in 1988 by producer Johnny Kitagawa. Originally, the group had six members, but Katsuyuki Mori left in 1996. People in Japan often called them a "national treasure." They were very important to the country's culture. The band changed the music industry by showing how groups can stay famous for a long time.

Learning how they became stars is quite interesting. In 1986, Masahiro Nakai auditioned for a talent agency. Other members joined the agency in 1987. At first, twenty boys were put into a group called The Skate Boys. They worked as backup dancers for a band named Hikaru Genji. In 1988, the producer chose six boys to start SMAP. They spent their early years acting in shows and appearing on television. They even starred in a drama called "Abunai Shonen III" where they played themselves. This helped them get known by many people early on.

SMAP became very successful in many different ways. They did not just sing music. They were also actors, radio hosts, and television personalities. They participated in sketch comedies and game shows. This was a new way for a band to work in Japan. Because of this, they gained fans of all ages. At first, mostly teenage girls liked them. Later, men and even elderly people became fans too. This wide range of fans helped them stay famous for many years.

Their music sales were truly huge. The group sold over 38.5 million records in Japan alone. They released 55 singles that all reached the top 10 on the charts. One song, "Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana," is very special. It was released in 2003 and is the best-selling single of the 21st century. It is so famous that it appears in school textbooks. Children in Japan even learn the song at a young age. Other popular songs include "Shake" and "Aoi Inazuma."

Television was another big part of their lives. In 1996, they started a weekly variety show called SMAP×SMAP. Many people call it "SmaSma." This show became one of the most watched programs in Japan. One episode in January 2002 had 34.2 million viewers. That is a very large number of people watching one show. The group worked together for a long time. They officially disbanded on December 31, 2016. Their legacy continues through their music and their many famous TV shows.
