SMAP was an iconic Japanese boy band that transformed the nation's entertainment landscape. The group's name stands for "Sports Music Assemble People." It consisted of five core members: Masahiro Nakai, Takuya Kimura, Goro Inagaki, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, and Shingo Katori.

Originally, the group was a six-piece ensemble including Katsuyuki Mori. However, Mori departed the band in 1996. In Japan, the group earned the titles of "national treasure" and "fortune and property of the country." They achieved unprecedented success across music, television, film, radio, and theater. This success occurred both as a unified group and through their individual professional careers.

The group's formation began through the talent agency Johnny & Associates. Producer Johnny Kitagawa founded the agency to recruit and train young performers. In 1986, Masahiro Nakai auditioned at age 14. Other members joined the agency in 1987. These members were initially part of a twenty-boy group called The Skate Boys. This group served as backup dancers for the band Hikaru Genji. In April 1988, Kitagawa selected six boys to form SMAP. During their early years, the members worked as actors and television personalities. They even starred in the drama series Abunai Shonen III, playing themselves.

SMAP's career path was unique due to the "Idol Ice Age" in the Japanese music industry. During the early 1990s, many weekly music shows ended. This created a scarcity of television exposure for singers. To counter this, the agency marketed the band through variety programs. Members participated in sketch comedies and game shows to build their presence. This non-mainstream marketing approach successfully expanded their reach. They moved from a fan base of teenage girls to include preteens, adult men, and the elderly. This shift happened as members became successful actors and television personalities.

The band's musical achievements were statistically massive. They released 55 singles, all of which reached the top 10 on the charts. They achieved 33 total number-one singles, including 22 consecutive number-one hits. Their discography also includes 24 top-10 albums and 14 number-one albums. In total, the band sold over 38.5 million records within Japan. One notable single, "Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana," was released in 2003. It became the best-selling single of the 21st century. It also ranks as the third best-selling single in Japanese history. The song is so culturally significant that it appears in school textbooks.

Television variety shows were a central pillar of the SMAP experience. In April 1996, they launched their weekly program, SMAP×SMAP. This show is often called "SmaSma" by fans. The program received widespread critical praise for its distinct format. It ranked No. 1 in annual household share ratings in several years, including 1996, 1997, and 2016. A single episode from January 2002 reached 34.2 million viewers. This makes it the seventh most-watched Japanese variety show in history. By 2016, SMAP×SMAP was the eighth longest-running prime-time program in the country.

Individual members also built significant solo careers that supported the group's longevity. Takuya Kimura became a massive star following his role in the 1993 drama Asunaro Hakusho. That series reached a household share rating of 27%, peaking at 31.9% for the finale. Masahiro Nakai became a prominent news presenter and television personality. He appeared on the daytime program Waratte Iitomo for 20 years alongside Katori and Kusanagi. Goro Inagaki launched the radio program Stop The SMAP in 1991, which continued airing through 2016. These diverse roles allowed the band to broaden the definition of a boy band's career.

SMAP's legacy is defined by how they changed the Japanese entertainment industry. They proved that boy bands could maintain long-term popularity. They also created new professional opportunities for the generations of bands that followed. Their ability to cross over into theater, film, and radio set a new standard. They showed that performers could be multifaceted entertainers rather than just singers. The group officially disbanded on December 31, 2016. However, their influence remains visible in the way Japanese idols navigate their careers today.
