Their name stands for "Sports Music Assemble People." The group had five members: Masahiro Nakai, Takuya Kimura, Goro Inagaki, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, and Shingo Katori. They started as a six-piece group in 1988. One member, Katsuyuki Mori, left the band in 1996.

SMAP was more than just a music band. They were actors and stars on TV shows. They even did funny skits on variety shows. This helped them find many different fans. At first, mostly teen girls loved them. Later, men and even older people became fans too. People in Japan even called them a "national treasure."

Their music was very popular. They sold over 38.5 million records in Japan. One song, "Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana," is very famous. It is even in school books. Another hit was "Gambarimashou," which helped more people learn their names. They also had a very big TV show called SMAP×SMAP. It was one of the most watched shows in Japan. The group worked together until they disbanded in 2016.
