John Hiromu Kitagawa was a central figure in the Japanese entertainment industry. He was a business magnate, a promoter, and a record producer. Kitagawa is most famous for founding Johnny & Associates. This was a talent agency that managed many popular boy bands. For more than 40 years, he held a virtual monopoly on creating these groups in Japan. This means he had nearly total control over the market for male pop idols. His influence reached far beyond music into television and theatre.

Kitagawa developed a specific system to create successful entertainers. He established the idol trainee system, which is still used by other industries today. The process began with open tryouts to find new talent. The agency recruited boys as young as ten years old. These recruits became part of a talent pool called Johnny's Juniors. These juniors lived in company dormitories and attended a company-run school. They trained intensely in singing, dancing, and acting to improve their showmanship. To build name recognition, these juniors often acted as background dancers for established acts. They also appeared on the weekly television variety show, "Hachi-ji da J." This allowed them to develop skills before they officially debuted as a major group.

Kitagawa's career began with a chance encounter in Tokyo. He was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1931. His family returned to Japan in 1933. His father, Taido Kitagawa, was a Buddhist priest. In the early 1950s, Kitagawa worked at the United States Embassy. While walking through Yoyogi Park, he saw a group of boys playing baseball. He recruited them to form a singing group and acted as their manager. He named this first group "Johnnys." This was the first all-male pop group in Japan. They used a new formula of mixing attractive performers with coordinated dance routines. This success set the pattern for all his future acts.

Throughout his career, Kitagawa managed dozens of famous bands. Some notable groups included SMAP, Arashi, V6, NEWS, and KAT-TUN. He also managed the Four Leaves, a four-member band that achieved great success in the 1970s. His business was incredibly profitable. At the height of the boy band boom, Johnny & Associates generated 2.9 billion yen in annual profits. Kitagawa's success earned him several Guinness World Records. He held records for the most No. 1 artists and the most No. 1 singles. He also held the record for the most concerts produced by a single individual. Despite this massive success, Kitagawa stayed out of the public eye. He rarely allowed his photograph to be taken. He also avoided making public appearances with his groups.

Kitagawa died on July 9, 2019, at the age of 87. He had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage stroke in June of that year. Following his death, a large memorial concert was held at the Tokyo Dome. This event included 154 artists and celebrities. For a long time after his death, Kitagawa remained highly regarded in Japan. However, this changed due to new investigations into his conduct. In 2023, a BBC documentary titled "Predator: The Secret Scandal of J-Pop" was released. This documentary brought widespread attention to allegations of sexual abuse against Kitagawa.

An independent probe eventually looked into these serious claims. The investigation concluded that Kitagawa had engaged in repeated and widespread abuse. This abuse occurred from the 1970s until the mid-2010s. The report stated that he had committed sexual abuse against hundreds of boys. These boys were members of Johnny & Associates, many of whom were still trainees. As of 2023, a reported 478 people had claimed to be victims. Of those, 325 sought compensation. A total of 150 victims were confirmed to have belonged to the company. These findings revealed a dark side to the massive entertainment empire he had built.

The scandal led to major changes for his former company. In response to the findings, Johnny & Associates announced it would change its name. The company is now known as SMILE UP. They are also removing the name "Johnny" from all related companies and performing groups. This move aims to distance the organization from Kitagawa's legacy. The revelations have changed how the Japanese public and the media view the history of the idol industry. What was once seen as a massive success is now viewed through the lens of these serious allegations.
