David Lawrence Geffen is a prominent American film producer, record executive, and media proprietor. He is widely recognized as a major architect of the modern entertainment industry. According to Forbes, Geffen is the wealthiest person in the global entertainment sector. As of 2024, his estimated net worth is US$9 billion. His career spans decades of influence in both the music and film worlds. He has founded or co-founded several companies that shaped popular culture.

Geffen's professional journey began with a focus on learning the inner workings of the industry. In 1964, he started as a mailroom clerk at the William Morris Agency (WMA). While delivering memos between agents, he studied the politics of the business. To secure a position as a talent agent, he faced a hurdle regarding his education. He claimed on his job application that he had graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He intercepted a letter from UCLA to WMA that stated he had not graduated. Geffen modified this letter to show he had completed his degree. This allowed him to advance into roles as a talent agent and personal manager.

In the music industry, Geffen established several influential record labels. In 1971, he co-founded Asylum Records with Elliot Roberts. The name Asylum was chosen because the owners often signed artists who struggled to find other companies. The label became a central force for the Southern California folk-rock sound. It signed legendary artists including Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and the Eagles. After leaving Asylum in the 1970s, Geffen founded Geffen Records in 1980. This label saw massive success with artists like Donna Summer and John Lennon. Lennon's album, Double Fantasy, became a massive seller following his death in December 1980.

Geffen Records underwent several corporate changes and ownership shifts over the decades. In 1990, the label was sold to MCA Records. Geffen received shares in MCA worth $550 million from this transaction. A year later, Matsushita Electric acquired MCA and paid Geffen $670 million. By 1999, Geffen Records merged with Interscope Records and A&M Records. This created the Interscope Geffen A&M label under Universal Music Group. In 2024, the company reorganized again. Geffen, Interscope, and Capitol Records now operate under the Interscope Capitol Labels Group.

Beyond music, Geffen made significant contributions to the film industry. He founded the Geffen Film Company in 1982. This company produced several notable films, such as Risky Business and Beetlejuice. In 1994, he expanded his reach by co-founding DreamWorks SKG. He established this studio alongside Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg. DreamWorks became a major force in Hollywood, securing a $100 million deal with ABC in 1995. Geffen eventually left DreamWorks in 2008 after years of significant industry influence.

Geffen has also become one of the most significant philanthropists in American education and the arts. He has pledged to donate the entirety of his future earnings to charity. He has made massive contributions to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 2002, he provided a $200 million endowment for the UCLA School of Medicine. He later donated another $100 million in 2012. This makes him the largest individual benefactor for the entire UC system. His gifts help cover the full cost of attendance for many students.

His support for the arts is equally extensive and reaches across the country. In 2015, he pledged $100 million toward the renovation of Avery Fisher Hall in New York. This gift earned him naming rights, and the venue is now known as David Geffen Hall.

At Yale University, he donated $150 million to the Yale School of Drama. This donation allowed the school to eliminate tuition for all master's, doctoral, and certificate students. He also donated $75 million to Columbia Business School to support new facilities in Manhattanville. These contributions ensure that future leaders in medicine, business, and the arts have the resources to succeed.
