Branson's career began with challenges during his early education. He attended Stowe School in Buckinghamshire until he was sixteen years old. During his school years, Branson struggled with dyslexia, a condition that affects reading and writing. He also has ADHD, which can impact focus. His academic performance was poor, leading his headmaster, Robert Drayson, to predict he would either become a millionaire or end up in prison. Despite these struggles, his parents were very supportive. His mother, Evette, was an entrepreneur herself who sold wooden products.

His first successful business ventures involved media and music. In 1966, Branson launched a magazine called Student with Nik Powell. He eventually used the magazine to advertise and sell records through the mail. This mail-order business grew into a chain of physical stores known as Virgin Megastores. In 1972, he officially launched the Virgin Records label. To support his artists, Branson bought a country estate to create The Manor Studio.

This studio helped launch the careers of many musicians, including Mike Oldfield, whose album Tubular Bells became a massive success. Virgin Records eventually became the largest independent record label in the world.

Branson expanded into the transportation industry through several different sectors. In 1984, he founded Virgin Atlantic, an airline company. His entry into aviation was inspired by a personal experience when a flight was cancelled in Puerto Rico. He later founded Virgin Atlantic Cargo and Virgin Holidays. In 1997, he moved into the railway industry during the privatisation of British Rail. The Virgin Rail Group won major contracts to operate the InterCity West Coast and InterCity CrossCountry franchises.

These rail operations lasted for many years, with the West Coast franchise running until 2019.

In the 21st century, Branson has looked toward the stars. In 2004, he announced the creation of Virgin Galactic. This company focuses on space tourism by using suborbital spaceplanes. The company utilizes technology like the SpaceShipTwo to take paying passengers into space. This venture is based at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California. Branson has expressed a desire to take his own children, Holly and Sam, on a trip to outer space through this company. This shows his ongoing interest in combining adventure with new technology.

Throughout his life, Branson has faced significant legal and competitive hurdles. In 1971, he was questioned regarding the sale of records marked for export. He eventually settled the matter by paying a fine and repaying unpaid taxes. He also faced a major legal battle with British Airways in the early 1990s. Branson accused the airline of a "dirty tricks" campaign to hurt his business. British Airways eventually settled the case, paying Branson and his airline significant compensation. This settlement included a "BA bonus" that Branson distributed among his staff.

Branson's financial success and honors reflect his impact on the global economy. In March 2000, he was knighted by the Prince of Wales for his services to entrepreneurship.
