society Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Vijay Vittal Mallya is an Indian businessman and former politician who became a central figure in major financial investigations. Born on December 18, 1955, in Mangalore, Karnataka, he grew up in a Konkani-speaking family. His father, Vittal Mallya, was the chairman of the United Breweries Group. Vijay Mallya studied at La Martinière Calcutta and graduated from St. Xavier's College in Kolkata with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1976. He gained early experience through internships in his family's businesses and at Hoechst AG in the United States.

In 1983, at the age of 28, Mallya became the chairman of the United Breweries Group following his father's death. Under his leadership, the group transformed into a massive multinational conglomerate. It eventually grew to include over 60 different companies. By the 1998–1999 period, the group's annual turnover had reached US$11 billion. This represented a 64% increase over a 15-year period. The conglomerate held interests in many sectors, including beverage alcohol, aviation infrastructure, real estate, and fertilizer.

Mallya's business empire included several highly recognizable brands and industries. He was the former chairman of United Spirits, which became the second-largest spirits company in the world by volume. His Kingfisher beer held a market share of more than 50% in India and was sold in 52 other countries. He also held leadership roles at Sanofi India and Bayer CropScience in India for more than 20 years. Beyond beverages, he owned the Royal Challengers Bangalore cricket team and co-owned the Force India Formula One racing team.

However, his business ventures also faced significant failures and legal scrutiny. In 2005, he founded Kingfisher Airlines, but the airline eventually became insolvent. By October 2013, the airline had lost its license to operate and had not paid employee salaries for 15 months. The company owed more than US$1 billion in bank loans, a figure that grew to at least $1.35 billion by November 2015. Mallya was accused of being a "willful defaulter" under Indian law. This term refers to someone who has the ability to pay debts but chooses not to. He also faced accusations regarding money laundering and the misappropriation of funds.

The financial collapse led to intense legal action from the Indian government and various banks. A group of 17 Indian banks sought to recover approximately ₹9,000 crore in loans. They alleged that Mallya routed these funds to gain stakes in about 40 companies worldwide. In 2016, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) began attaching Mallya's assets in India to cover unpaid loans. These assets included shares in United Breweries and several flats in Bengaluru. By December 2016, the total value of attached assets reached hundreds of crores of rupees.

Mallya's political career also ended amidst these controversies. He served as an independent member of the Rajya Sabha, which is the upper house of India's Parliament. He was elected to this position in 2002 and again in 2010. However, he resigned from the Rajya Sabha on May 2, 2016. This resignation occurred just one day before an ethics panel was set to meet regarding his potential expulsion. At the time, his Indian passport had been revoked, and he had already left the country.

Currently, Mallya resides in the United Kingdom, and the Indian government is pursuing his extradition. Extradition is a formal process where one country asks another to return a person to face legal charges. While his last formal appeal against extradition was rejected in 2020, the legal process remains complex. He was arrested by the UK Metropolitan Police in April 2017 on behalf of Indian authorities regarding fraud accusations. He was released on bail while the courts continued to review the case. The legal battle continues as authorities work to resolve outstanding claims and recover owed funds.
