He was born on December 18, 1955, in Mangalore. His father, Vittal Mallya, ran a large group of companies. Vijay went to school at La Martinière Calcutta and St. Xavier's College. He earned a degree in commerce in 1976. After college, he worked as an intern in the United States. He later married Samira Tyabjee and then Rekha. He has a son and two daughters. In 1983, Vijay became the leader of the United Breweries Group. He was only 28 years old at that time. Under his lead, the group grew very large. It grew into a group of over 60 different companies. By 1998, the group made 11 billion US dollars each year. He owned many kinds of businesses. These included beer, real estate, and even newspapers. His Kingfisher beer is sold in 52 different countries. He also led companies like Sanofi India and Bayer CropScience.

Vijay Mallya also entered the world of sports and travel. He started an airline called Kingfisher Airlines in 2005. He also helped own the Force India Formula One racing team. He was even the owner of the Royal Challengers Bangalore cricket team. However, his airline faced many hard times. By 2013, the airline had not paid its workers for 15 months. The company also owed more than 1 billion US dollars to banks. Eventually, the airline had to close down because of these losses.

Because of these money problems, Vijay faced many legal issues. In 2015, he had to leave his role at United Spirits. He also served as a member of the Indian parliament. He was part of the Rajya Sabha, which is a high group of leaders. He resigned from this position in May 2016. Many banks in India say he did not pay back the money he borrowed. They say he was a "willful defaulter." This means they believe he chose not to pay his debts.

In early 2016, Vijay Mallya left India and went to the United Kingdom. The Indian government wants him to return to face charges. These charges include financial fraud and money laundering. Money laundering is a way to hide where money comes from. In 2017, police in the UK arrested him for these reasons. He was released on bail while the courts decided what to do. The Indian government is still working hard to bring him back to India. They are using a process called extradition to try to make this happen.
