Taikichiro Mori was a prominent Japanese businessman and academic. He is best known for founding the Mori Building Company. This company became a major force in urban development. Mori achieved incredible financial success during his lifetime. In fact, Forbes magazine ranked him as the richest person on Earth. This title applied to him during the years 1991 and 1992. His wealth was immense and shaped his legacy in Japan.

Mori's journey began in the Minato area of Tokyo. He was born on March 1, 1904. His father worked as a rice trader. This trader also managed 30 buildings within the Minato area. These early connections to property may have influenced Mori's future. He pursued a high level of education in business. He attended the Tokyo College of Commerce. He successfully graduated from that institution in 1928. This school is known today as Hitotsubashi University.

Before he was a full-time businessman, Mori was a professor. He spent many years working in academia. In 1932, he was appointed as a Professor at Kyoto Sericulture Technical High School. This school is now called the Kyoto Institute of Technology. Later, he moved to the Yokohama Commercial School. This institution is known today as Yokohama City University. Mori held several important roles at this school. He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce. He held this leadership position from 1954 until 1959.

Mori managed to balance teaching with his new business interests. He actually founded the Mori Building Company while he was still working for the university. This shows how he transitioned from theory to practice. After he retired from his university position in 1959, he changed focus. He became the president of the Mori Building Company. This allowed him to lead his company directly. He moved from the classroom to the center of the business world.

The scale of Mori's wealth was truly historic. In 1991, Forbes reported his net worth at $15 billion. This made him the wealthiest individual globally during the 1991-92 period. Such a large sum of money reflects his impact on the economy. His work helped build the modern landscape of Japanese cities. The Mori Building Company remains a significant name in construction and management. His life serves as a bridge between academic study and massive industrial growth.

Mori's business legacy continues through his descendants. His two sons, Minoru and Akira, took on leadership roles. Minoru headed the Mori Building Company. Akira headed the Mori Trust. The family's influence moved into the next generation as well. His granddaughter, Miwako Date, now manages the Mori Trust. She took over the leadership of the trust from her father. The Mori family name remains deeply connected to Japanese business structures.

Mori lived a long life in the city of Tokyo. He passed away in Tokyo on January 30, 1993. He was 88 years old at the time of his death. The cause of his death was heart failure. His life spanned much of the 20th century. He saw Japan change from the era of rice traders to a global economic power. His transition from a professor to the world's richest man is a unique story.
