Kazuo Taoka was a highly influential figure in the history of the Japanese yakuza. He was a leader of the Yamaguchi-gumi, which is Japan's largest yakuza organization. Because of his massive influence, many people called him the "Godfather of Godfathers." He also earned the title of "The Japanese Godfather." Taoka served as the third kumicho, or boss, of the Yamaguchi-gumi. He held this powerful leadership position from 1946 until 1981.

Taoka's early life was shaped by difficult circumstances in the city of Kobe. He grew up as an orphan and spent his youth as a street fighter. During this time, he was guided by Noboru Yamaguchi. Noboru Yamaguchi was the boss of the Yamaguchi-gumi. Taoka earned a lifelong nickname during his years as a fighter. His nickname was "Kuma," which translates to "the Bear." He received this name because of his signature fighting style. He would often claw at the eyes of his opponents during fights.

Taoka's path to leadership involved significant legal challenges and shifts in strategy. He spent several years in prison for murder from 1937 to 1943. After his release, he assumed the role of kumicho at the age of 33. During this era, Japan was moving past World War II and the subsequent occupation. The government began to focus more on internal criminal syndicates. This led to constant police crackdowns and frequent arrests. Taoka realized that traditional criminal activities in back alleys were becoming too risky. The high cost of police attention made these activities less profitable.

To grow the organization, Taoka implemented a major change in how the group operated. A friend suggested that he move away from small-scale crime. Instead, Taoka started a full-fledged port cargo handling business. This move helped the Yamaguchi-gumi expand significantly. It grew from a small gang that broke strikes on the Kobe docks into a massive syndicate. At its highest point, the organization had over 10,000 members. This made it the largest criminal syndicate in the world.

Taoka was known for being extremely suspicious of other yakuza clans. He was very wary of his rivals and often acted to protect his group's interests. In 1963, he famously refused to join the Kanto-kai. The Kanto-kai was an inter-yakuza confederation that brought different groups together. Later, Taoka worked to reduce tension through diplomacy. In 1972, he forged an alliance between the Yamaguchi-gumi and the Inagawa-kai. He hosted a sakazuki ceremony at his home to finalize this agreement. A sakazuki ceremony is a formal ritual used to establish bonds.

Despite his power, Taoka faced physical danger from rival groups. In 1978, he survived an assassination attempt in Kyoto. A member of the Matsuda-gumi, a rival gang, shot him in the back of the neck. This attack happened during a limbo dance exhibition at a nightclub. The attacker was eventually found dead in the woods near Kobe several weeks later. Taoka continued to lead the Yamaguchi-gumi after this event. He remained in power until he died from a heart attack in 1981.

Taoka's personal life was also connected to prominent figures in Japanese culture. His son, Mitsuru Taoka, was a producer of films in Japan. His daughter, Yuki, was married to the noted new-age musician Kitaro from 1983 to 1990. After Taoka's death, his wife Fumiko briefly took over the leadership of the gang. This period of transition ended in 1984 when a new kumicho, Masahisa Takenaka, was chosen. Taoka's legacy remains a significant part of the history of organized crime in Japan.
