He is best known as the founder and first shōgun of the Ashikaga shogunate. His leadership marked the beginning of the Muromachi period in Japan. This era began in 1338 and lasted through his death in 1358. Takauji was a descendant of the Minamoto Seiwa Genji line. His family had settled in the Ashikaga area of Shimotsuke Province. Today, this location is part of the Tochigi Prefecture.

Takauji's rise to power was a complex process of shifting alliances. In 1333, he served as a general for the Kamakura shogunate. He was sent to Kyoto to manage the Genkō War. Over time, he became disillusioned with the Kamakura leadership. He decided to join Emperor Go-Daigo and the warrior Kusunoki Masashige. Together, they seized control of Kyoto. This movement helped the general Nitta Yoshisada lay siege to Kamakura. The fall of Kamakura ended the power of the Hōjō clan.

After the fall of the old shogunate, the Emperor tried to restore imperial rule. This period was known as the Kenmu Restoration. However, the samurai clans grew unhappy with these new political systems. They wanted a return to a feudal government. Takauji gained significant support from these warriors. He eventually claimed the title of Sei-i Taishōgun. He also began allotting land to his followers without permission from the imperial court. This action further distanced him from the central government.

Takauji's path to the shogunate involved several intense military conflicts. In 1335, he suppressed the Nakasendai rebellion led by Hōjō Tokiyuki. He then fought Nitta Yoshisada in the battles of Sanoyama and Mishima. In 1336, he faced a major setback when forces under Prince Takanaga drove him from Kyoto. He fled to Kyūshū to regroup. There, he allied with local clans and won the Battle of Tatarahama. The decisive moment came at the Battle of Minatogawa in 1336.

By defeating Yoshisada and killing Masashige, Takauji secured control of Kyoto.

His victory led to a unique and turbulent political situation. Takauji installed Emperor Kōmyō to lead a Northern Court. This was done in opposition to the exiled Southern Court. This division started the Nanbokuchō period, or the Northern and Southern Court period. For nearly 60 years, two different emperors would fight for legitimacy. Because of this, historical records use two different sets of era names. The Southern Court used names like Engen and Kōkoku. The Northern Court used names such as Ryakuō and Kan'ō.

Historical views of Takauji vary depending on the source. Confucian-minded scholars sometimes labeled him as one of Japan's "Three Great Villains." This was because he betrayed his former masters and the throne. However, the Zen master Musō Soseki offered a different perspective. Soseki noted that Takauji remained calm and fearless during battle. He also described Takauji as a merciful and very generous leader to those below him. These different views show how complicated his legacy remains.

Takauji's influence extended far beyond his own lifetime. After he died in 1358, his son Ashikaga Yoshiakira became the next shōgun. The struggle between the two courts continued for many years. Eventually, Takauji's grandson, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, united the Northern and Southern courts in 1392. Today, Takauji is remembered through various cultural lenses. His life is depicted in the NHK Taiga drama "Taiheiki."
