He was a member of the Minamoto family. This family came from the Seiwa Genji line. They lived in the Ashikaga area of Shimotsuke Province. This place is known today as Tochigi Prefecture. Takauji eventually became the first shōgun of the Ashikaga shogunate. His rule changed how Japan was governed for many years.

Takauji's rise to power involved many difficult choices. In 1333, he was a general for the Kamakura shogunate. He was sent to Kyoto during the Genkō War. Later, he decided to leave his old masters behind. He joined Emperor Go-Daigo and a man named Kusunoki Masashige. Together, they seized the city of Kyoto. This helped end the power of the Hōjō clan.

History remembers Takauji in different ways. Some scholars called him a villain. They said this because he betrayed his former masters. They felt he was not loyal to the throne. However, a Zen master named Musō Soseki saw him differently. Soseki said Takauji stayed calm during battles. He also said Takauji was merciful and very generous.

Takauji faced many battles to keep his power. In 1336, he fought the Battle of Tatarahama in Kyūshū. He also fought the decisive Battle of Minatogawa. After these battles, he took control of Kyoto for good. He helped start the Northern Court with Emperor Kōmyō. This created a long period with two different courts. This era lasted for almost 60 years.

Takauji's life shaped a whole new era for Japan. His work began the Muromachi period in 1338. He ruled until he died in 1358. After he passed away, his son Yoshiakira became the next shōgun. Later, his grandson Yoshimitsu finally united the two courts. Today, we can see his history in old statues. We can also visit his tomb at Tōji-in.
