He served as the 15th and final shōgun. A shōgun was a powerful military leader who ruled the land. Yoshinobu was born in Edo in 1837. His father was a leader named Tokugawa Nariaki. Because of his family, Yoshinobu had a chance to lead. He was trained in many skills like politics and martial arts. He grew up with a very strict education.

As he grew older, Yoshinobu worked to change the government. He wanted to make the shogunate stronger and more modern.

He asked other countries for help to do this. He invited a military mission from France to help his army. He also worked with people from Russia and Britain. He even bought equipment from the United States. These steps were meant to update his forces. He hoped these changes would keep his government in power.

However, many people in Japan wanted a different kind of rule. Some samurai formed an alliance to stop the shogunate. They wanted to give all the power back to the Emperor. This led to a conflict called the Boshin War. In early 1868, a fight called the Battle of Toba–Fushimi happened. Yoshinobu was the leader of the Tokugawa forces during this battle. He realized the other side had the Imperial banner. Because of this, he left his army and escaped to Edo.

After the war, Yoshinobu stepped down from his big job.
