Tokugawa Iemochi was a very important leader in Japan. He was the 14th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. A shogun was a top military leader who ruled the land. Iemochi held this high office from 1858 to 1866. His time as leader was a very busy era. Japan was just starting to open up to western nations. This change caused much trouble and unrest inside the country.

Iemochi had a very busy life from the start. He was born in Edo, which is now Minato-ku in Tokyo. His father was a lord named Tokugawa Nariyuki. As a small child, he was adopted by a new family. In 1851, he became a young adult named Tokugawa Yoshitomi. Later, he changed his name to Iemochi after becoming shogun. He was not the only person people wanted to lead. Other groups wanted men like Tokugawa Yoshinobu to be shogun instead.

Rules helped Iemochi manage his big job. Before the previous shogun died, he left a special will. He said a man named Ii Naosuke must help Iemochi rule. Iemochi also had to talk about politics with his mother, Tenshoin. In 1862, Iemochi joined two parts of the government together. He married Princess Kazu, who was the daughter of Emperor Ninko. She chose to use the title Miya instead of Midaidokoro. This marriage was a way to bring different leaders together.

Iemochi made a very famous trip to the capital city. On April 22, 1863, he traveled to Kyoto. The emperor had asked him to come visit. Iemochi brought a huge group of 3,000 helpers with him. This was a very rare and special event for Japan. No shogun had visited Kyoto in 230 years. It was the first time since the era of Iemitsu. This long procession was a major moment in his life.

Iemochi died quite young at the age of 20. Many people say he died from a sickness called beriberi. This happens when a person does not get enough vitamin B1. Before he died, he adopted a son named Tayasu Kamenosuke. This boy was only three years old at the time. Later, the new shogun, Yoshinobu, adopted the boy too. Yoshinobu became the very last Tokugawa shogun in history. His rule led to a big change called the Meiji Restoration.
