He was a samurai and a powerful lord known as a daimyo. By working with other great leaders, he helped bring peace to a divided land. He became the first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. This was a government that ruled Japan for many years. His leadership changed how people lived together for generations.

Ieyasu's journey to power began with a very difficult childhood. He was born in 1543 at Okazaki Castle.

His father was a minor lord named Matsudaira Hirotada. Because his family lived near many strong rivals, life was often dangerous. When Ieyasu was only five years old, he was taken as a hostage. This meant he had to live with a rival clan to keep peace. He spent many years living away from his home. He eventually moved to the Sunpu Domain to live with the Imagawa clan.

As he grew older, Ieyasu learned how to lead and fight.

In 1556, he had a ceremony to mark his adulthood. He changed his name from Takechiyo to Motoyasu. He later changed it again to Ieyasu. He eventually became an ally to the famous leader Oda Nobunaga. This alliance helped him grow much stronger. Ieyasu also worked with another leader named Toyotomi Hideyoshi. These three men are often called the Great Unifiers of Japan.

This was called the bakuhan system. It used specific rewards and punishments for the daimyo and samurai. This helped everyone follow the same rules and live in peace. His family's rule lasted until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. This long period of stability shaped the Japan we know today. His life shows how one person can change the course of history.
