His father was an ashigaru, which is a foot soldier. As a young boy, Hideyoshi had no surname. He even had to beg on the streets to survive. Despite these hard beginnings, he rose to become the most powerful man in the country.

Hideyoshi's rise to power began by serving a great lord named Oda Nobunaga.

He started as a simple soldier in the Oda clan. He soon became a trusted helper and even carried Nobunaga's sandals. Hideyoshi was very good at many different tasks. He could manage kitchens and supervise castle repairs. He was also a clever negotiator who used bribes to win over enemies. By 1568, he had become one of Nobunaga's most important generals. He even took a new name to show his growing status.

Everything changed in 1582 during the Honnō-ji Incident.

This was a moment when Oda Nobunaga was killed by an assassin named Akechi Mitsuhide. Hideyoshi acted quickly to avenge his lord. He defeated the assassin at the Battle of Yamazaki. This victory allowed Hideyoshi to take control of the leadership. He spent the next several years winning many battles to unite Japan. He conquered areas like Shikoku in 1585 and Kyūshū in 1587. He also won the Siege of Odawara in 1590.

He even changed his clan name to Toyotomi in 1585 to show his new status.

Hideyoshi left a lasting mark on how Japan worked for a long time. He created a system that limited which people could own weapons. This was called a sword hunt, and it was meant for the samurai. He also helped build and fix many beautiful temples in Kyoto.

His rule helped end the chaotic Sengoku period. After he died in 1598, his son Hideyori took over for a short time. Eventually, a new leader named Tokugawa Ieyasu took control of Japan. However, the things Hideyoshi built and the rules he made stayed important for many years.
