It began in 1603 and lasted until 1868. This era is often called the Edo period. A shogun was the top military leader of the land. Tokugawa Ieyasu became the first shogun after a big battle in 1600.

He ruled from a large place called Edo Castle. This castle was in the city of Edo, which is now Tokyo. The shogunate helped bring peace to a country that had many civil wars.

To keep control, the shogunate used a special system. The country was split into many small areas called han. Each area was led by a local lord known as a daimyō.

The shogun used a rule called sankin-kotai to watch these lords. This rule forced the lords to live in Edo every other year. It also required them to leave their wives and children in the city. This kept the lords from starting rebellions against the shogun. The government also had strict laws for the samurai warrior class. These laws controlled where they could build or fix forts.

Life in Japan was organized into very strict social groups. The daimyō lords were at the very top of this hierarchy. Below them were the samurai, who were the warrior class. Farmers, artisans, and traders were in the lower groups.

The shogunate also had a policy called Sakoku. This policy meant that Japan was mostly isolated from the rest of the world. Most foreigners were banned from entering the country. Japanese people were also not allowed to leave. The government even banned Christianity to keep the country stable.

Even with strict rules, the country changed a lot. Trade and cities grew very quickly during this time. Many people moved from the countryside into the big cities.

By the year 1800, Edo was a huge city. It had over one million people living there. This made it one of the biggest cities in the world. New types of art, like ukiyo-e, became very popular. However, the samurai and lords sometimes struggled with money. Farmers also faced hard times when harvests were poor. This led to many protests and uprisings over the years.

The end of the shogunate came in the mid-1800s. This time was called the Bakumatsu period. In 1853, a U.S. Navy fleet arrived in Japan. This event made many people in Japan very unhappy. They wanted to change how the country was run. In 1868, the shogunate officially ended during the Meiji Restoration.

The power went back to the Imperial Court. Some followers of the old shogun fought back in the Boshin War. They fought at the Battle of Toba-Fushimi and later at Hakodate. Eventually, a new government began to modernize Japan.
