Bakumatsu

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Bakumatsu was a time of huge change in Japan. It took place during the final years of the Edo period. During this time, Japan ended its policy of staying isolated from the world.

The country changed from a feudal shogunate into a modern empire. This change happened because of pressure from foreign military and diplomatic groups. People in Japan were divided on how to handle these new visitors. Some people wanted to protect the Emperor from outsiders. Other groups wanted to keep the old Tokugawa shogunate in power. This era was full of tension and new ideas.

Many different groups fought for control during these years. Some groups were pro-imperial nationalists who wanted to support the Emperor. Others were shogunate forces that included elite swordsmen. Many smaller groups also tried to use the chaos to gain power. There were two main reasons for the unrest in the land. First, some local lords felt they were being treated unfairly. These lords had been left out of power since the year 1600. Second, many people felt angry about the arrival of Westerners. They used the phrase "revere the Emperor, expel the barbarians" to show this feeling.

Foreign ships began visiting Japan more often in the 1800s. They were looking for supplies or places to help with shipwrecks. In 1808, a British ship called the HMS Phaeton caused a shock in Nagasaki. This led the government to guard its ports even more tightly. In 1825, the shogunate even made a rule to stop all contact with foreigners.

However, some people began studying "Western studies" to learn new sciences. They wanted to learn how to make better weapons. By 1852, groups in Satsuma and Saga were making iron for guns. They used special furnaces to help build their defenses.

Everything changed in July 1853 when Commodore Matthew Perry arrived. He brought a fleet of four ships to Edo Bay.

Perry was ready to fight if his talks with Japan failed. He even used powerful shell guns to show his strength. This forced the leader Abe Masahiro to make very difficult choices.

Abe signed a treaty in 1854 to allow some trade. This treaty opened the ports of Shimoda and Hakodate to Americans. Soon, other countries like Russia and Britain also sent missions. The Russian leader was named Vice Admiral Euphimy Putiatin.

These new treaties changed how Japan worked with the world. In 1858, Townsend Harris helped negotiate a new trade treaty.

This treaty opened even more ports like Yokohama and Kobe. It also allowed Americans to live and trade in these areas. This period of history connects to how modern nations interact today. It shows how a country can change its entire way of life. The Bakumatsu led directly to the birth of the Meiji government. This helped Japan move from an old system to a modern one.
