He lived during a time of great change called the Bakumatsu. Ryōma came from a low-ranking samurai family in the Tosa Domain. His family had once made money by brewing sake. Because of their rank, they were treated differently than high-ranking samurai. Even though his rank was low, Ryōma became a very skilled swordsman. He studied at the famous Chiba Dojo in Edo. There, he even became a teacher of sword fighting.

Japan was changing because of foreign ships. In 1853, Commodore Matthew C. Perry arrived from the United States. His fleet of ships helped end Japan's policy of isolation. This policy had kept Japan closed to the world for a long time. The new treaties made many people think the government was weak. Ryōma wanted to change how the country was ruled. He believed power should return to the Emperor in Kyoto. He also wanted Japan to have modern industries and democracy.

Ryōma was a very brave and active leader. He once had to leave his home without permission. This was a very dangerous thing to do back then. He used the name Saitani Umetarō to hide his identity. He also worked with a man named Katsu Kaishū. Instead of fighting him, Ryōma became his assistant. He helped form a private navy called the Kameyama Shachū. This group later became known as the Ocean Support Fleet.

One of Ryōma's biggest jobs was bringing rivals together. He helped create the Satchō Alliance in 1866. This joined the Satsuma and Chōshū domains together. These two groups had been enemies for a long time. This alliance helped change the government of Japan. Ryōma also helped negotiate the resignation of the Shogun. This led to the Meiji Restoration. His work helped move Japan away from the old feudal system. He dreamed of a new kind of nation.

Sadly, Ryōma's life ended very suddenly. In 1867, he was attacked at an inn in Kyoto. This happened on his 31st birthday. He and his friend Nakaoka Shintarō were both hurt during the fight. Ryōma died that same night. People later believed a group called the Mimawarigumi was responsible. Even though he died young, his ideas changed Japan forever. He is remembered today as a visionary leader. His life helped shape the modern world we know.
