He was born in 1836. His family held a low rank. This meant they had less power than other samurai.

Ryōma was a master with a sword. He studied at a famous school in Edo. Later, he used a Western gun to defend himself.

During this time, Japan was changing. Foreign ships arrived in Japan. This made the ruling government look weak. Ryōma wanted to change how Japan was run. He wanted to give power back to the Emperor. He also wanted Japan to have new industries.

Ryōma was a great leader. He helped two rival groups join together. This was called the Satchō Alliance. He also helped start a private navy.

His work helped bring a new era to Japan. But his life ended too soon. In 1867, men attacked him at an inn in Kyoto. Ryōma died that night at age 31.
