This war lasted from 1868 to 1869. It was called the Boshin War.

For a long time, a leader called a shogun ruled Japan. Many people were unhappy with the shogun. They felt he did not handle foreign visitors well. These visitors came from far away. They brought new ideas and new trade. Some leaders wanted the young Emperor Meiji to rule instead.

The Emperor's forces won the war. The shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, gave up his power. Some loyal fighters moved to the north. They tried to start a new group there. But they lost their last fight at Hakodate. After the war, Japan began to modernize. This meant the country grew in new ways. Many old leaders even found new jobs in the new government.
