Sakamoto Ryōma was a pivotal samurai and political leader during the Bakumatsu period.

This era marked the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. Ryōma was a key figure in the establishment of the Empire of Japan. He worked to transition the nation from feudalism to a modern state. His vision included democracy, nationalism, and industrialization. He also sought to return political power to the Imperial Court. His efforts helped end centuries of isolationist policy in Japan.

Ryōma was born on January 3, 1836, in the Tosa Domain.

His family held the rank of kashi, or low-ranking samurai. This rank was lower than the joshi, or high-ranking samurai. In Tosa, these classes were strictly separated by social status and residence. The Sakamoto family had originally gained wealth through sake brewing. This wealth allowed them to purchase their samurai status. Despite his low rank, Ryōma became a highly skilled master swordsman. He trained at the Chiba Dōjō in Edo under Chiba Sadakichi Masamichi. There, he became a shihan, which is a master instructor of Kenjutsu.

The political landscape changed in 1853 with the Perry Expedition. Commodore Matthew C. Perry arrived from the United States with a fleet of ships. This event forced Japan to end its sakoku, or isolationist, policy. In 1854, the Convention of Kanagawa was signed by the rōjū, or regents. This treaty was seen by many as an unequal agreement. It damaged the prestige of the Shōgun, the military ruler. Many samurai believed the Shōgun could no longer fulfill the Emperor's will. Ryōma joined the Sonnō jōi movement to oppose the Tokugawa government.

Ryōma often operated under aliases to avoid the authorities. He used the name Saitani Umetarō to work against the Bakufu. Leaving one's domain without permission was a crime known as dappan. This offense was punishable by death. Ryōma eventually left Tosa to pursue broader political goals for Japan. He also worked closely with Katsu Kaishū, a high-ranking official. Instead of assassinating him, Ryōma became Katsu's protégé and assistant. This relationship helped Ryōma understand the necessity of modernizing Japan's military.

One of Ryōma's most significant achievements was the Satchō Alliance. In 1866, he helped negotiate a secret pact between rival domains. These were the Satsuma and Chōshū domains. Historically, these two powerful groups were irreconcilable enemies. This alliance created a unified force against the Tokugawa shogunate. Ryōma also founded a private navy called the Kameyama Shachū. This company later became known as the kaientai, or Ocean Support Fleet.

He even used Western technology, such as a Smith and Wesson revolver, for defense.

Ryōma's influence helped lead to the Meiji Restoration. He played a role in negotiations for the Shōgun's resignation. This occurred in 1867 under Shōgun Tokugawa Yoshinobu. This transition moved Japan away from the old feudal system. However, Ryōma did not live to see the full results of his work. In March 1866, he survived an assassination attempt at the Teradaya inn.

He was alerted to the danger by his future wife, Narasaki Ryō. This event is a famous moment in the Bakumatsu period.

Sakamoto Ryōma was assassinated on December 10, 1867. This occurred at the Ōmiya Inn in Kyoto. The attack happened on his 31st birthday. Assassins attacked the inn at night, causing a violent struggle. Ryōma and his companion, Nakaoka Shintarō, were both fatally wounded. While initial reports blamed the Shinsengumi, the Mimawarigumi later confessed to the crime in 1870. The exact identity of the primary assassin remains unproven. Ryōma's death occurred shortly before the start of the Boshin War. His legacy remains as a visionary who imagined a modern, independent Japan.
