The Shinsengumi was an elite group of swordsmen in Japan. They worked as a secret police force during a time of great change. This period was called the Bakumatsu, which was the end of the Tokugawa shogunate. The group formed in 1863 to protect leaders in the city of Kyoto.

They helped maintain order when political tension was very high. Many people remember them today because of their brave and intense history.

This group followed a very strict set of rules. These rules were part of a code for how a warrior should act. One rule was that members could not take part in private fights. Another rule said they could not raise money on their own. If a member broke these rules, the penalty was seppuku. This was a serious ritual where a person ended their own life.

The group also had a rule about how to act during battle. If a leader was killed, the other members had to fight and die there too.

History shows that the group started with different factions. At first, they were called the Mibu Roshigumi because they stayed in a village called Mibu. One early leader was a man named Serizawa Kamo. Later, the group was renamed the Shinsengumi.

A man named Kondō Isami became a very famous leader. He led the group through many important events in Kyoto. The group grew quite large during this time.

At its peak, the Shinsengumi had about 300 members. Most members were samurai, but they were unique because they allowed others to join. This included people like farmers and merchants.

They wore very distinctive uniforms to be seen in battle. Their clothes were blue with white mountain stripes on the sleeves. They also wore a white cord across their chests. This helped keep their kimono sleeves from getting in the way of their swords.

Famous events like the Ikedaya incident made the group very well known. This event happened in July 1864 at an inn in Kyoto. After this, many more people wanted to join the squad. However, a civil war called the Boshin War changed everything. The group fought in battles like Toba-Fushimi and Kōshū-Katsunuma. By 1869, the era of the Shinsengumi had come to an end.
