The samurai were a professional class of warriors in pre-industrial Japan.

The word samurai likely comes from the word "saburau," which means "one who serves." This shows they were retainers who served powerful lords. These lords were often called daimyo or shoguns. While the leaders were part of the warrior class, they were not called samurai themselves. Some people use the word "bushi" to mean the same thing as samurai.

Being a samurai required many years of intense training. They focused on three main skills: swordsmanship, archery, and horsemanship. Because these skills were so hard to learn, samurai were much more effective than regular soldiers. Regular soldiers, called ashigaru, often only had a few days of training. A single samurai with a longbow and a steel sword was very expensive. In fact, one samurai cost more than 50 ashigaru armed with pikes.

In the early days, Japan used a national army of regular people. This system ended around 792 AD because it was hard to manage. The government found that these regular soldiers were not very good fighters. Instead, they began to rely on wealthy families who already knew how to fight. These elite families provided mounted archers who could win battles. Over time, these warriors became a landed class that owned much of the countryside.

Two very powerful clans rose to prominence during this time. These were the Minamoto clan and the Taira clan. They became very wealthy and gained high positions at the imperial court. They even married into powerful families to gain more prestige. These two groups eventually became rivals and fought in the Genpei War from 1180 to 1185.

This era showed how much power the warrior families had gained over the central government.

Eventually, new technology changed the role of the samurai forever. In 1853, the United States forced Japan to open its borders to trade. This brought modern firearms to the country. Guns were much easier to use than a sword or a bow. A person could learn to use a gun in just one or two weeks. Because of this, Japan no longer needed a special class of lifelong warriors. By 1876, the special rights of the samurai were all gone.
