The ninja were special agents in old Japan. They often worked as spies or scouts. Many people think they were assassins, but there is little evidence for this. They mostly focused on secret work for money. This work was different from the way samurai lived.

Their skills were used to help leaders during times of war. They could also act as agitators or surprise attackers. This made them very useful in many different situations.

Ninja used many clever ways to do their jobs. They practiced a way of fighting called ninjutsu. Some old books describe many different fighting techniques. One book lists 48 specific points for their training. They learned how to make tools from bamboo called makibishi. They also made special footwear that made no sound. They even learned how to listen for very small sounds.

These skills helped them stay hidden and safe.

The history of these agents goes back a long time. Some stories link them to a prince named Yamato Takeru. Others mention a spy named Otomono Sahito from the 6th century. In the year 1162, a man named Daisuke Togakure moved to the mountains. He worked with a warrior-monk named Kain Doshi. Together, they helped create the art of ninjutsu. Later, his family started a ninja school called the Togakureryu.

Many ninja came from the Iga and Kōga regions. These areas had high mountains that were hard to reach. This helped the ninja groups stay secret. In the Iga province, people lived in organized clans. They had different ranks within their groups. A jōnin was a high leader who hired others. A chūnin was an assistant to the leader. A genin was a lower person who did the actual missions.

These groups were very active during the Sengoku period. Between 1485 and 1581, leaders often hired them for war. They were great at night attacks and ambushes. In 1560, a group of eighty Kōga ninja helped a leader named Tokugawa Ieyasu. They worked to protect him during a dangerous journey. Later, after the Tokugawa shogunate began, the ninja faded away. Some even served as bodyguards for the new leaders.
