Ninjutsu refers to the skills used by covert operatives in pre-modern Japan. These people were known as ninja or shinobi. They were experts at gathering intelligence and using irregular warfare. Some of their secret techniques were written down in special ninja scrolls. Studying these old scrolls has changed how we think about ninja today. While some modern schools claim to teach these old ways, their history only goes back to the 1950s.

Learning these skills was a long process of training. Ninja often began their studies when they were children. They practiced physical tasks like long-distance running and climbing. They also learned how to swim and how to walk very quietly. Beyond physical strength, they studied survival and scouting techniques. They even learned about explosives and how to use poisons. It was important for them to know about many different jobs so they could use disguises.

The history of these skills goes back many centuries. Spying in Japan can be traced to Prince Shōtoku from the years 572 to 622. During the Genpei War from 1180 to 1185, a leader named Minamoto no Kuro Yoshitsune used warriors called shinobi. Later, during the Kenmu Restoration between 1333 and 1336, Kusunoki Masashige also used these methods. In 1162, a samurai named Daisuke Togakure traveled to the mountains of southwest Honshu. There, he met a Chinese warrior-monk named Kain Doshi. Together, they worked to create the art of warfare known as ninjutsu.

Different groups of people used ninjutsu in unique ways. During the Sengoku period, many warlords used ninja to perform secret raids. In the Kōka and Iga provinces, local samurai called jizamurai used these tactics to protect their lands. They formed strong alliances to stay independent from local governors. These groups remained powerful until Oda Nobunaga conquered Kōka in 1574 and Iga in 1581. Many famous manuals were written later, such as the Bansenshūkai in 1675. These books helped record the many different schools of ninjutsu.

Ninja used many clever tools and disguises to finish their work. They often dressed as priests, merchants, or monks to blend in.

A common disguise was the robes of a Buddhist priest. They used tools like ropes, grappling hooks, and even small collapsible boats. A heavy tool called a kunai helped them gouge holes in walls. They even had wooden shoes called mizugumo to help them move over water. A successful ninja tried to use just one tool for many different tasks. This helped them stay light and ready for anything.
